This movie has been one of my long time favorites since I was a child. I looked forward to Easter (besides the ressurection of Christ) because that's when it would be aired. This movie has enjoyable music arrangements and a captivating story that could have been one or many individuals/families' story. I admonish you to see it if you haven't already. Purchase it, this one is a keeper. There's something for everyone in this movie.

Watching this movie, decades after it first burst upon the international stage, I was surprised by its wonder and music and joy and pure entertainment, and moral lessons and message and timelessness. My 3 year old loved it and asks to see it again and again which I found funny, since as a child, I always remembered it as an adult movie!

The Sound of Music is a classic movie that everybody will enjoy, no matter the age! Julie Andrews performs at her best in this inspiring movie of a family during the Nazi regime. The best aspect of this movie is that as you watch and enjoy the movie, you also learn about what it was like living at the time of the Nazi's rise to power. This movie is a must whatch and is definatly a ten out of ten across the board!

Where else can you find a movie so beloved that you not only know the songs, you know the lines...friends of mine quote this movie all the time..."I know you don't but you've GOT TO"...."Rolf PLEASE!"...."It'll be my first party father!"...."Why didn't you tell me to bring along my harmonica?"....Some generations can even tell you which moments used to be cute when they showed it annually on television...let's face it...this movie is part of our lives. Essential viewing.

To start with, I love the Sound of Music ever since I was little. Now I have a 2yr old and I love this even more. I can bear with my little one asking to watch this every day. The songs are great and the baby starts singing along recently. It's better than anything on TV these days. I disagree with one of the reviewer- We used to watch the old fullscreen version, then we received this as a gift and boy is the pictures even MORE impressive! You see alot more information like the baroness looking up to track Maria after the Cuckoo song scene. The sets are even more dramatic. The ballroom looks bigger and the house looks huge. And you see ALL 7 kids in the DoReMe number. Yes, the people gets smaller, especially with the little TV set we have, but the color is much more vibrant. They really did a good job of restoration for this edition. You can see alot more detail in the background. I think it's a must have for everyone who love this movie. Also, the bonus materials are very interesting. It should satisfy alot of the curiosity one may have about the story and the people who brought this together.

So to help her determine if she's truly ready to become a nun she's sent to be the governess for the stern Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) and his seven children, who've driven away all of their former governess's. Soon they warm up to Maria, though, as does the Captain, and together they change the way the von Trapp household is run.
Based on the true story of the von Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music was the last musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein as Oscar Hammerstein II died of cancer in 1960. Originally conceived as a Broadway musical that opened up in 1959, the rights changed hands several times before the film was eventually made. Since then The Sound of Music has become the third highest grossing movie of all time when it's grosses are adjusted for inflation (just behind Gone With the Wind and Star Wars respectively) and saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy after the flop of 1963's Cleopatra.
Surprisingly, considering I'm not typically a big fan of musicals with a few exceptions, I actually have to say that I did enjoy The Sound of Music. Of course, this has less to do with the music than the fact that the characterizations are full and complete, allowing you to lose yourself in the characters and feel for their plights and passions. The plotting is also quite taut for a film that's almost three hours long, keeping you on the edge of your toes with the character's personal crises as well as with the outward crises that lands in Austria with the Nazis in the latter parts of the film.
The acting is very well done, as that's what really gets you invested in the characters. At the time The Sound of Music went into production Julie Andrews was largely unknown as Mary Poppins hadn't been released, but she nails the part of the innocent and free spirited Maria. Christopher Plummer, who famously didn't enjoy working on the film (later referring to it as The Sound of Mucus) doesn't let on on screen his displeasure with the film, and still you feel the characters distaste for the Nazi regime and his love for Maria as well as his transformation from stern father figure to hands on patriarch.
The biggest problem with The Sound of Music is that its a little too sweet, dripping with saccharine. This also means that some of the musical sequences can come off a bit to extremely cheesy, but even through that the film still feels genuine. And while I understand the need to make changes to a real life story in a film, every once in a while a filmmakers choices of change can be a little insulting to the subject of the film. The real Captain von Trapp, as stated by his children and his wife Maria, was not a stern man, and did not run his family like a military platoon as depicted in the film. Despite the pleadings of Maria and his children, the filmmakers decided to keep the characterization in the movie, which seems to me a little insulting to his memory.
Overall, though, I do have to say that I enjoyed this movie. It gives an interesting depiction, especially towards the end of what Austrian citizens had to go through after the Nazi invasion. If you like musicals, or want to be transported to a more innocent time I highly recommend this movie. Just be careful after watching the movie or you could find yourself humming Rodgers and Hammerstein's songs for the next several weeks!

The best movie ever. Who doesn't walk through the house humming the soundtrack, flitting from here to there in the grass on a beautiful spring day. Anyone who sees this film is inspired. Growing up on musicals and seeing almost every classic, I have to say that this is one of my top 3.

This is a classic musical. It is a worldwide favorite that occurs in Austria during World War II. It opens with "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music." My younger children love it, and are entranced by the puppet show. They enjoy the song "My Favorite Things." Julie Anderson is wonderful then and still wonderful now when she stands up to Captain Von Trapp. This is a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical which can be watched over, and over and over again. The plot is great, the music, is great, and the acting is great. It has two separate love stories in it. The scenery just in the opening scene is breathtaking. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys great musicals.

For the past several years I have plugged "The Sound of Music" into the VCR player during the Christmas season, particularly while decorating my Christmas tree. I know the story because I've seen the movie so many times. I do not need to sit and watch the movie to be reminded of its splendor, but the music always delights and has been a wonderful background and distraction during the process of decorating. I ordered my DVD for the movie a month or so ago(in February) and of course couldn't resist plugging it into the DVD player the first opportunity I had. It is one of the best movie purchases I have ever made. This is a two-disc package. One disc is an introduction by Julie Andrews, a singalong, the movie and commentary. The second disc is loaded with extras, added in celebration of the 40th anniversary edition of the movie. What a treat! I have had several nights of viewing pleasure and will go back to this again and again!

We never tire of watching the Sound of Music. The scenery, music, costumes and interaction between the characters is perfect. A great addition to our DVD library!
