I remembered seeing this when it was broadcast in the late 1960s (and again in the early 70s), and I was thrilled to find it available on DVD. This little-known production is surely one of the best ever made.
It was shot on video tape in the mid-1970s, so it's a bit fuzzy by modern standards (which is probably why it hasn't been broadcast again) but that gives it a dark and intimate look that works with the story. The production values are very good considering the (probably) limited budget of a made-for-TV special.
Palance carries the show with a bigger-than-life performance in the title role (though the supporting cast is also quite good.) His Jekyll is subdued and genteel (a stretch for Palance) and while his Hyde is not a physical monstrosity (no buck teeth and hair makeup) he is still truly monstrous. Palance is perfect at playing the ultimate "heavy". A gritty, frighteningly realistic version of the classic tale of horror.
