Overview

With skyrocketing monetary demands of filmmakers and stars rendering special feature- intense DVDs increasingly difficult to justify, the budget DVD section of the local DVD retailer has become increasingly popular amongst frugal cinemaphiles simply wanting to view a film in good quality without breaking the bank. Platinum's release of the brutal Sonny Chiba martial arts classic The Street Fighter is sure to please fans with realistic expectations of what to expect from a budget DVD, providing a decent transfer and a complete cut of the film that was branded with the fatally attractive "X" rating upon initial release. Considering the film's age, the correctly letterboxed (2.35:1) image is certainly passable if not commendable. Although not completely grain-free or without slight debris, the image is relatively clean and clear and exhibits little digital artifacting. Skin tones are fairly accurate, as overall color is slightly faded. Viewers anticipating the familiar hissing and bone-crunching auditory delights in addition to the catchy, twangy score will have to give their volume a gentle one or two notches up, as the audio is mixed slightly low, though is consistently free of distortion or (unintended) hiss. As one may guess given the low retail price the disc sells for, extra features are slim, though they are indeed present. The menu is easily navigated, with a brief bio and filmography of Chiba offering an abbreviated schooling in the tough-guy actor's enduring career. The packaging of the disc itself is also to be commended for its unique, slightly elongated slender jewel-case design. For DVD collectors running out of space due to bulky box sets and bloated special editions, the packaging here is both sturdy and space-saving. One of the main advantages of the DVD format is that it preserves a film in a high-quality manner. While it would be nice if budget DVD releases such as this were given slightly more care in regards to preservation, the enjoyment factor is certainly retained here, making this disc a low-priced no-brainer for longtime fans.
