The Stuff

( 1 )

Overview

Anchor Bay Entertainment has done horror fans a nice favor with this well-crafted edition of Larry Cohen's quirky, satirical horror film. The anamorphic video transfer is quite impressive, presenting Paul Glickman's cinematography in a pristine style that shows off its colors and sharp detail in high style. The mono audio lacks the sonic scope a stereo remix would have provided but still manage manages to create a clear, distortion-free soundtrack that gets the job done. In terms of extras, The Stuff offers a ...

The mono audio lacks the sonic scope a stereo remix would have provided but still manage manages to create a clear, distortion-free soundtrack that gets the job done. In terms of extras, The Stuff offers a trailer and a feature-length commentary from writer/director Larry Cohen. The commentary is the true selling point for the film's fans: despite periodic gaps of silence, Cohen offers plenty of detail about the film's production in his usual off-hand, dryly humorous style. Highlights of the commentary include the different substances the effects men used to create the title creature and a great story about Cohen's dealings with the Teamsters' Union. All in all, Anchor Bay's edition of The Stuff is well worth a look to horror fans and its commentary track makes it a must for Larry Cohen aficionados.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
The best point of comparison for this low-budget spoof is John Carpenter's They Live, another 1980s horror flick that mixed wit and gore with anti-consumerist ideology. On the surface, The Stuff is just an exploitation flick -- a jumble of The Blob, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Carpenter's remake of The Thing, full of amateurish special effects and hammy performances. But writer/director Larry Cohen actually has a lot on his mind, and it's to his credit that his jabs at everything from Leave It to Beaver-conformity and America's diet obsession to corporate iconography and advertising agency excess are presented so matter-of-factly that you can take 'em or leave 'em. The Stuff isn't exactly subtle, but its sly parody is so unobtrusive, yet pervasive, that viewers can soak it in while still enjoying the film as a no-frills action/adventure flick. The character actors, cult favorites and TV stars past and future who make up the cast, give The Stuff a sort of postmodern zip that only improves with age; even viewers who know nothing about the actors, however, will appreciate Michael Moriarty's tongue-in-cheek gumshoe, Paul Sorvino's over-the-top vet, and the cameo-laden TV-commercial pastiches that lighten the mood. By packing his script with irony and his cast with up-for-it performers, Cohen renders questions of taste and production values refreshingly moot.

    Great "STUFF"

After directing "God Told Me To" and "It Lives"...Larry Cohen unleashed a joke on consumerism with this tale of a commercial treat gone awry.

Well made, campy horror - with a great 80's New York vibe. If you haven't seen it - get it. If you have - then, why am I writing?
