    Lesser Murphy is Sometimes More

"The Texican" is later issue Audie Murphy. Co=starring Broderick Crawford, it is formula revenge western with modest twists of character made all the more appealing by another solid performance from the highly underrated Murphy. There are confusing plot continuity lapses throughout, hinting at a longer cut in mind, and several romantic sub-plts are added for sheer window dressing and are undeveloped. The audio on the DVD seems disconnected from the supporting characters as if the whole enterprise were post-dubbed, but this is a minor distraction at best. Attempting the flavor of the then-popular spaghetti western genre, this oater is mainly of interest to Audie Murphy fans and perhaps as a primer to instruct those naysayers, that this critically dismissed actor was not only far more talented than his general reputation, but also that he was capable of performances far outreaching his impovershed scripts.
