The Thomas Crown Affair

Overview

The glossy remake of The Thomas Crown Affair sports a good look, but little in the way of extras, being a typical MGM/UA DVD release. The dual-sided disc includes both widescreen (2.35:1 letterboxed, non-anamorphic) and full-frame versions of the film. The video portion of the disc is of excellent quality, with a good color balance and good flesh tones.

There appears to be little edge enhancement, and blacks are solid, with no indication of compression artifacts. Oddly enough, there are very occasional print blemishes, unexpected for a 1999 release. The movie as a whole does have a low-key look to it, with some scenes appearing almost to have been shot under natural lighting. English and French Dolby 5.1 tracks are provided, along with a director's commentary from John McTiernan. The audio is solid without demonstrating a great deal of flair or innovation, though there are some nice tracking and directional audio effects (especially in the glider sequence). The bass is solid and clean, and those whose systems include subwoofers will benefit. Dialogue is clear throughout and well separated, and there is a very nice music mix that utilizes the soundstage well. The French track sounds a bit unbalanced, but the voice cast is good and the dubbing accurate. The extras on the disc are limited to trailers for the original film and this remake, as well as the McTiernan commentary. The trailers are in excellent shape, both on the video and audio sides. The McTiernan commentary, however, is as dull as dishwater, even though he focuses on the technical aspects of getting the film made -- he's a droner, and it is hard to focus on his voice. Still, this is a good, solid disc, if not overly exciting.

A favorite movie-add to your collection!

This movie is classy & entertaining; twists & turns keep you thinking. This is a remake of an earlier movie with Faye Dunaway, who does a cameo in this movie. I think the newer movie is much better, beautiful visuals, great music & performances. I wish I could live like Thomas Crown, if only for a week!

    All round Great Remake

Liked this movie far more than the original which is rare. By changing the story emphasis from the 'caper' and making it a romance the filmakers breath new life into the story. Rene and Pierce are at the top of their game and the sparks are there. Note: Rene Russo was 45 yrs old when she made this movie and puts many younger actresses to shame.

    Bravo: I loved it!

I have watched this movie over and over again and it still fascinates me! I think that the plot was very much believable. I have been told that the original is much better, but I've been so comfortable with this version, that it doesn't merit me watching the original version. Brosnan was clever, witty, and very sharp. Russo was sexy, clever, very sharp and highly intelligent. This is one of all time favorites!

    Couldn't be better!

I found the film to be perfect. The astonishingly, handsome Pierce Brosnan did a excellent job along with Rene Russo. The original was definitly beaten out, though i found this movie to be too much like the James Bond series. Great film to watch when you can catch it.

    Sexy, tantalizing and dashingly clever

The Thomas Crown Affair came off as chic and suave, it had an old flair to it with a clean modern twist. It Alomost reminds me off a cosmoplotian with a lemon-lime twist to it. Rene Russo steals the show and defanitly has her fair share of wearing the pants in the movie although Pierce Brosnan is always one step infront of her. Classic modernistic. Great to watch if you enjoy slightly unrealistic but tantalizing story lines. I recommend this movie to those who think fast and sleek.

    See The Original

I thought this remake was more than a little lame. The original with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway had a much more believable (if sadder) ending. Also, the love scene in the original has no nudity, but manages to be much more erotic.

    A Hit Movie!

I thought this movie was excellent. It did have some very ''steamy'' love sections which rather detracted from the mystery of it (I thought), but it had a very suspenseful plot. Although it wasn't as high-action as other films (James Bond), it was definitely a great movie, and I would highly recommend it!

    Great action and mystery movie

This was a great cat and mouse movie which Catherine Banning knows that Thomas Crown stole the painting. It is a matter of her doing detective work in catching him. Thomas Crown knows that she is on to him and it is his intention on not making a mistake and getting caught. It had some very steamier love scenes. The movie has a surprise ending and it was exciting.

    Intriguing Drama

The Thomas Crown Affair certainly has a wonderfully written script. The ingenuity behind each of the wealthy businessman's schemes keeps one interested. But one does need to be cautious, particularly with the nudity in this film. I was surprised at the extensive nudity that Russo and Brosnan subjected themselves to. Overall, it was an engaging story much in the fashion of a 007 James Bond movie. It was an intelligent movie with unique references to famous works of art.
