Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Chivalry is not dead, nor, happily, is old-school Disney cel animation. This rousing animated feature stars the studio's holy trinity of beloved cartoon characters: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. In the late 1930s, rising stars Donald and Goofy were brought in to prop up Mickey's sagging career. But in The Three Musketeers, it is one for all and all for one, as our Disney dream team are determined to become "great big heroes" in the palace of Princess Minnie. Only four things stand in the way of their becoming musketeers: They are mere janitors in the palace; Donald is a coward; Goofy is a doofus; and Mickey is too small. Or so says Pete, the captain of the Musketeers, who secretly covets the throne for himself. When all his attempts to dispose of Minnie fail, Pete assigns Mickey, Donald, and Goofy to guard her, sure that they will create a disaster. But friendship and teamwork save the day. "I've got friends that make me feel ten feet tall," Mickey proclaims. The Three Musketeers is a royal treat, with clever songs set to familiar classical melodies by, among others, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Gilbert & Sullivan. Mickey, Donald, and Goofy handle the swashbuckling action and slapstick comedy with panache, and the animation is a cut above the usual produced-for-video standard. Be "en garde" for it.
All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
The direct-to-video The Three Musketeers is a fairly entertaining little cartoon, but even the children that are its target audience are unlikely to list it among their favorite Disney outings -- or even be able to remember too terribly much about it ten minutes after they've finished watching it. Musketeers is diverting enough, but for the most part it's unmemorable; the only moments that really stick in the mind are the songs, and that's mainly due to the fact that they are familiar classical pieces to which lyrics have been set. The story is not really based upon the familiar Dumas novel, settling instead to simply take the idea of musketeers and the setting and grafting a "new" story onto it -- although in fact there's really not much that is new to the plot. Still, the story is told with gusto, there are a handful of good gags, plenty of action sequences, an appropriate message for young viewers and, despite it being only a DVD/video offering, animation that has the professional mark of the Disney studio. And, of course, it features a trio of animated characters that, even today, are a pleasure to be with. Not a terriby good film, but certainly an amiable enough way to pass an hour.

    It's al'right!

This movie is good, because I watched the classic cartoons when I was little. It's funny, and I like the action. But cut the romance. It has got to go. But still I like it. Goofy was extremely funny.
