Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
When it came to cartoon series, the 1980s were a golden age of crossover merchandising. All the shows -- many based on comic books and/or imported from Japan -- had a corresponding line of toys, some of which even predated the cartoon. Along with Robotech, on of the most beloved of these franchises is Transformers. The show's concept seems simple enough -- robots in disguise -- but the story line is so much grander. The series -- which ran three full seasons, including three straggler episodes, and also spawned a feature film -- is an intergalactic epic following two factions of expatriate alien robots, Autobots good and Decpeticons evil, who can all transform themselves into really cool vehicles, not to mention dinosaurs! Stranded on Earth, they wage war over a universal commodity -- energy -- making the series just as resonant today as it was in the '80s. The 16-episode first season introduces these mechanical beings and adds two sympathetic humans, Spike and Sparkplug, to the age-old conflict. The second season moves into full swing with 49 episodes featuring the Insecticons and Constructicons, new robot groups introduced at the end of Season 1. Indeed, even if ten-year-olds at the time did not pick up on Transformers' antiterrorist, Cold War, and ecological subtexts, the show still lived up to the tag line's generous promise of "more than meets the eye."

THE best cartoon from the 80s!

This series has to be my favorite cartoon of the 80s. Season 2 is when I became hooked on the Transformers. They consisted of two main groups (Autobots who were good and Decepticons who were evil) along with several subgroups (Arialbots, Stunticons, Technobots, Terrorcons, etc.). Yes, they even had a few human allies (both sides did). I like this series because it doesn't make the basic outline of the show seem more cartoonish than it really was, even though it did lose it's momentum and was cut off after the third episode of season 4. If you have never watched the Transformers and want to know where it all started, this is definitely the series for you. I think it is now known as Generation 1. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Beast Wars, Beast Machines and Robots In Disguise can't even hold a candle to this series. It is truly a classic cartoon that hopefully will be enjoyed by the next generation of Transformers fans!

Excellent- The Golden Age of half hour toy commercials

Transformers was a 1980's animated epic. The overly PC garbage of today cannot hold a candle to the cool animated battles of the Autobots and Decepticons. Sure it was a ploy to sell toys and the introduction of a new character was simply a new figure in the line but a cool show sold a really cool toy line. Transformers was a show that was science fiction without the annoying wierdness that has to pervaded most blockbuster cartoons since (Ninja Turtles, Pokemon, etc.) This series started off OK with Season 1 but Season 2 was its real glory days. Transformers kind of jumped the shark with the movie and began its decline in its third season. The fourth season was a mericfully brief 3 episodes which are on a DVD already. I lost interest after the ''Generation 1'' series winded down. The ''Beast Wars'' and ''Aramada'' proved unwatchable.
