The Tudors - Season 3

Love this series!

I love the Tudors series on Showtime. I'm also an avid reader of anything to do with the whole family and wives! I was a little disappointed that the 3rd season was so short. I feel they could have done more with it. It felt like they rushed through wives 3 and 4 to get to wife number 5. While I realize that there wasn't any scandle with Jane Seymour, and Anne of Cleves was only a scandle when she was set aside, I think they rushed the show to get to Katherine Howard. But overall it is a good show that I've enjoyed watching.

Bloody England

When I first started watching this series I wasn't very sure I would like it, There was a series done about 25 years by public television that was really great and the lead actor really looked the part. Henry was a very big man for his time, over 6 feet tall, large boned and physically very impressive, as this other actor looked even down to the red hair and temperment. Rhys Meyers doesn't look the part at all, being a very small man. However he has done a great job as a childish, bombastic spoiled brat of a man.
Except, possibly Katherine of Aragon, none of his wives wanted to be his Queen. Ann Bolyn was in love with another man whom she wanted to marry, but the men in her family want the power that goes with her being Queen, Jane Seymore wanted to be a nun, but again the men in her family wanted that power. Ann of Cleaves also had no choice but managed to hang onto her head, Catherin Howard was a prostitute and didn't want to marry the King who was twice her age, but the men who produced her wanted the power. Katherine Parr was in love with another man and betrothed, the power play again, she lived in terror of her life the whole time she was Queen. And so far this series hasn't portrayed the gluttony of the King and the serious obesity that took over his life. His father left the Crown rich when he died and Henry left the Crown broke. He was a very poor excuse for a King, man and husband. I can't wait for the 4th series to be released.

Henry VIII Not Believable

Bought this beause we were tired of waiting to get it through our rental store and now I wish I had waited. The actor that plays Henry VIII is just not believable as an aging Henry. So tired of pop-eyed stares and yelling as the fall-back for his lack in his range of acting. This guy is just too whimpy in stature and he's acting like he has "short-man" syndrome...you know when little guys walk around with chips on their shoulders and rant and rave for attention...this actor has that down pat! Then when Henry sends his best friend, Charles to do his dirty work when the disgruntle nobles try to revolt it was just too much. I do not understand why the movie industry/networks insist on changing history in the name of "entertainment". The audience is not that stupid...let history be real...all the sex, politics and scandal is enough to entertain us without changing history. In the previous seasons they did this by only showing one sister to Henry and they married her off to the old Portugal King. The HBO story of Henry VIII made a few years ago was much more believable and the actor who played Henry did a fantastic job. Even though Henry was a monster with his sexual appetite, at least you could understand that his feelings of being inadequate...because he felt he was his brother's replacement to the thrown. That and the fact that he felt obligate to fulfill his promise to his father on his death bed that he most important role as king was to provide an heir. Don't think I'll buy the next season before renting it first!

Not as good as Season 1 and 2

This season was weak. I loved season 1 and 2. In this season there is too much importance given to sex (scenes with King jerking off in bed are not necessary and greatly cheapen the overall effect of the Tudors saga). Also Catharine Howard is portrayed as a simple minded slut. In reality she was a living breathing woman with a brain who was forced into marrying the king who was double her age in order to elevate the Howard family in court. She was charitable (she sent blankets to prisoners in the Tower), she tried to promote mercy in the king's judgements against others, she faced her destiny bravely. This was portrayed much better in King Henry VII starring Emily Blunt. It is quite frankly degrading to women and history to turn the tragic story of a beautiful, naieve but brave queen who was forced into a marriage with an old man (king henry Vii) and turn it into a story about a mindless, giggly, stereotypical slut. No one is that one-dimensional. I hope Michael Hirst lowers the sex and increases the depth of character to create a memorable and moving character as well as storyline.

A series both steamy and educational, both sexy and poignant

While he does physically resemble Henry VIII, Jonathon Rhys Meyers captures the essence of the man and his personality, his intelligence, his quirks, his wit, his humor and his paranoia and cruelty. It is a real roller coaster ride. Henry can be such a rat, but one can't help but feel heartbroken for him when Jane Seymour dies. Although some of the events in the series depart from historical fact (such as Margaret marrying Brandon instead of Mary) it does on the whole stay true to what I have read in historical accounts of Henry VIII and his wives. I enjoyed all three seasons but my favorite is Season 2 as I deeply admire Anne Bolleyn. It has inspired many discussions with friends. If one wants romance and history all in one, this is the series to watch.

Tudor History Lovers!

I love this stuff. Sometimes my blonde brain cannot follow the political and religious turmoil but it's still a fun romp.

The Tudors Season 3

This was entertaining and engaging. The attire was indeed fit for a king and the settings great. Made me do some more reading about Henry VIII and his six wives.

Excellent series

Excellent series. I am always left wanting more and dreading that Henry's reign must come to an end.

Brings a whole new perspective to the history of Henry VIII

Most people think of the overweight, jowly King Henry and know that he went through six wives, beheading some of them. This series presents a virile, competitive, athletic and lusty young king, who is desperate to hold on to the kingdom he inherited from his father and eager to leave a legacy to a male heir. The series shows us a man interested in theory and religion but not above using both for his own purposes. Henry and his wives and his court are shown to us for their many facets. Some were greedy for riches and fame. Others were reformers trying to purify the church. Others were just pawns. Even though I know the history, I stay interested.

Not the best Tudors Season

I love the Tudors t.v. show, but after I watched this season, I just wasn't as enthralled with it as seasons 1 & 2. JRM as Henry VIII is great and does a great job, but I just couldn't get into the whole Brandon vs. Aske vs. Henry VIII element of the story. Of course, I realize that this did happen somewhat in history, it just made the show boring to me. The girl they chose for Jane did a good job, and as much as I despise Jane Seymour, I was sorry to see her go. I certainly don't understand why they chose the girl they did for Katherine Howard...a horrible choice! I felt that they could have chosen someone just a little more mature to play Katherine Howard.
I just prefer seasons 1 & 2 because they had more passion, love, and more of Anne Boleyn. I know, I know, season 3 wasn't supposed to have Anne Boleyn. But I do miss her! Overall, this season was ok, and a must if you saw seasons 1 & 2. Hopefully, season 4 will be better.

Tudors good show biz version.

So what if a lot of it is fiction, it's fun and entertaining.

Love this show!

Continuation of a great show, best drama on tv, yeah you have to pay xtra for showtime but it's worth it, especially if the history of this period interests you, unique & engaging, really great acting by many, esp. J.Rhys Meyer's portrayal of Henry VIII, a shame this series hasn't been nominated for anything...if you're new to series it helps to have watched from the beginning/know something about the history but i think anyone can get into it, doesn't skimp on anything
