She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant Marc Michel, reprising his role from Demy's masterful debut, Lola. A completely sung movie, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is closest in form to a cinematic opera. Composer Michel Legrand composed the score, modeling it around the patterns of everyday conversation. Umbrellas was re-released in 1997. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

    A reviewer

Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a delight for the ear and eye. The music by Michel Legrand is sublime and the performers are perfect in this all-singing movie. A non-French speaker, I had no trouble at all enjoying every moment of the film except when I had the handkerchief at my face wiping away the tears that seem to come each and every time I watch. One of the best films I have ever seen!!!

    One of a kind -- a masterpiece!

"Les Parapluies" is a must-see for anyone who loves the French language, and for those who appreciate good 60's cool jazz stylings. The dialogue is easily understood, even with just high school French proficiency, and the subtitles are easy to follow. The sets and costumes create a little world of 60's France for the viewer, transporting you to Cherbourg of the 1960's. The acting is flawless, as are the vocals and instrumentals. (The actors do not do the singing, but you wouldn't know it.) Highly recommended. I watch it over and over.

    luv this film so much...

first fell in love with this movie when it was shown during foreign language week in my high school back in 1975 (took French in high school), and loved it. i saw it again back in the early 90s on VHS, but was glad it was remastered digitally and put on dvd just recently, which I purchased from this site. little bit disappointed with the 'extras' as there was a short piece on jacques demy doing an interview...came to like the interview so much that i hoped it could have been extended... This is STILL the BEST movie I have ever viewed!!! It is greater than the maximum 5 stars!!! I cannot grow tired of this film.

    This movie will surprise you...

I am not usually a big fan of foreign language films, however this is no ordinary movie. The beauty of the colors and the music made 'Umbrellas' magical. It was so easy to follow along, and it was mezmerizing to watch the story unfold. This is one of the best...

    A real tear-jerker

I thought I was immune to crying during a movie. Wrong! The Umbrellas of Cherbourg made me feel like I was in love for the very first time...every time I watched it. The colors are vibrant, the photography is almost alive in it's simplicity. You can almost believe you're really in Cherbourg, following the characters through their ordeals and passions, and the ultimate discovery that love is never ideal: it is a compromise, much as a walk in the rain sometimes requires an umbrella. Did I like this film? Just let me say 'oui!'; I am now learning to speak french.
