Overview

Forty years before The Sopranos pushed TV's limits for violence while simultaneously drawing criticism from Italian Americans for promoting negative ethnic stereotypes, The Untouchables achieved a similar double dip -- in this case, telling the cops' side of the story. This first volume of the series arrives on DVD in a four-disc set packing the initial 14 episodes of Season 1, as well as the 102-minute series pilot, "The Scarface Mob." Based on the 1957 autobiographical novel by former Bureau of Prohibition agent Eliot Ness and produced by Desilu (Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball's production company), The Untouchables won series star Robert Stack (who played Ness) an Emmy in 1960. The pilot, narrated by radio-gossip potentate Walter Winchell, (who also went on to narrate the rest of the series) originally aired as a two-part episode of the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse anthology series in April 1959 and was ultimately recut into a feature-length film to be released in theaters. "The Scarface Mob" here includes the on-camera introductions by Arnaz and Winchell that appeared before Parts One and Two of the original broadcasts. The series also featured performances by Abel Fernandez (Agent William Longfellow), Nicholas Georgiade (Agent Enrico Rossi), Steve London (Agent Jack Rossman), and Paul Picerni (Agent Lee Hobson). The other 14 hour-long episodes include: "The Empty Chair"; "Ms. Barker and Her Boys"; "The George 'Bugs' Moran Story"; "The Jake Lingle Killing"; "Ain't We Got Fun?"; "Vincent 'Mad Dog' Coll"; "Mexican Stake-Out"; "The Artichoke King"; "The Tri-State Gang"; "The Dutch Schultz Story"; "You Can't Pick the Number"; "The Underground Railway"; "Syndicate Sanctuary"; and "The Noise of Death."

    UNTOUCHABLES

Elliot Ness kicks butt as he vies for control over society and battles against miscreants, gamblers, and corruption. In tales of intrigue and mystery with real life characters and real life happenings, this DVD carries us back to prohibition and the birth of the lottery and many exciting tales in between. Definitely worth the buy. Definitely worth the time. I could watch these again and again.
    Just a fun series!
