The Vikings

( 6 )

Overview

This epic adventure tale still manages to entertain in all of the best Saturday matinee ways: it's action-packed, deadly serious (in the best way), and it feels like a comic book come to life, albeit one written by Wagner. Oh, and most importantly of all, it contains Vikings, those mad pillaging Odin-worshipping death-slayers. In other words, it's fun. The film was also shot on-location in the beautiful fjords of Norway, adding just enough realism into this adolescent fantasy (again, in all the best ways). MGM ...

MGM Home Entertainment brings director Richard Fleischer's film to DVD in a great widescreen presentation (2.35:1 enhanced), which is really the only way to see it if you can't see it in the theater. Colors are bold, the picture is sharp, and the film's breathtaking location shots really stand out even more. The disc also contains a fine English language mono soundtrack, as well as French and Spanish mono tracks. Multiple subtitle options are also available. But the disc also contains a very informative and entertaining featurette with Fleischer, giving one a pretty thorough overview of the film's historical origins, the fabulous Norwegian locations, working with star Kirk Douglas, and much more. Fans of the film should love it. Also included on the disc is the original theatrical trailer.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
A big, robust and hearty adventure epic, The Vikings is no classic, but it provides a considerable amount of entertainment value, especially for those who are fans of empty-minded action. Not that Vikings doesn't have other things on its mind than fights and wolf pits and manly punishments; it's just that its mind doesn't really move too deeply into those other things. Yes, Janet Leigh is on hand for some "kiss panels" and to provide the appropriate plot complications, but she's handled rather mechanically. And there's plenty of family secrets and hidden rivalries, but they're not etched in a particularly Eugene O'Neill-insightful manner. No, Vikings is your typical Saturday morning adventure flick, but blown up big and given a generous budget and estimable cast. The stars can't do a lot with the material, of course, but Kirk Douglas clearly enjoys the chance to let all the stops out and prove that he can both act AND bound across a row of oars. Tony Curtis is not so comfortable with the goings-on and, as is often the case with a period costume piece, doesn't really seem to fit in. But Ernest Borgnine is a hoot as the Viking father to end all Viking fathers, and Leigh looks lovely and determined. It's visually a delight, especially with Jack Cardiff's powerful cinematography. Richard Fleischer's direction is not his best, but it's much more than adequate and keeps things moving at a lively pace.

Raw yet glamorous sea and sword epic!

For some reason 'The Vikings' is fondly remembered as one of the bloodiest films in cinema history - certainly from the 1950s. That's odd, because aside from Kirk Douglas getting his eye pecked out by a hawk (which is rather violently depicted) there are no other moments of extreme bloodshed in this film. Yes, there are epic battles, but these are all shot through the glamour and gauze of pre-Braveheart euphoria void of guts and gruesome carnage. Douglas stars as Einar, an 'I'm too sexy for my breast-plate' pin-up of a Viking. Einar¿s way with the ladies is forever shattered when his face is deliberately disfigured by Eric's (Tony Curtis) pet hawk. This attack stirs up a life-long hatred that is strengthened by both men's love for the British Princess (Janet Leigh). You would think with Vikings and kidnapped royalty the plot would be rather vibrant but actually it¿s dull and uninspiring from this point forward with the ultimate showdown between Einar and Eric a foregone conclusion. MGM gives us a handsome looking transfer. Colors are rich and vibrant. The travelogue footage of the Fiords is surrealistic and gorgeous. Black levels are solid. Contrast levels are bang on. Only occasionally does the original negative betray the vintage of the film. Age related artifacts are kept to a bare minimum. There is no edge enhancement, pixelization or shimmering of fine details in this presentation. The audio is MONO. I thought all Cinemascope films were stereophonic?!? The audio is generally balanced though there are occasions where it seems muffled and lacking in clarity. Extras include a featurette with the director, Richard Fleischer that is remarkably useful and engaging - if all too short. It's not a great film but it is a fairly wonderful looking transfer. And hey, any film with Kirk Douglas is never all bad!

One of the Greatest Adventure Films of All Time

Marking both the last great films of the Old Hollywood of the World Wars, and one of the first great epics of modern filmmaking, ''The Vikings'' is a treat for any viewer. Kirk Douglas offers one of the most exuberant performances of his career (seeming relatively reserved in other works like ''Spartacus''), the stunts are real, performed by the actors themselves; the action is heroic, fun, and engaging; and the plot of vengeance and jealousy leaves you wandering just who's really supposed to be the good guy. Nobody can forget the decisive moment Einar (Douglas), in a drunken stupor, finds out he can have the kidnapped princess for himself. ''I'll make her scream til they can hear her in Wales!'' This is the way movies were meant to be made! (Warning: Popcorn required.)
