M. Night Shyamalan, the creative mind behind The Sixth Sense and Signs, wrote and directed this characteristically atmospheric thriller. The rustic village of Covington is a small town in rural Pennsylvania that is home to 60 souls. The citizens of Covington lead a quiet and peaceful life, but not without an unusual caveat -- terrible creatures lurk just outside the borders of the village, and the people of Covington have reached an agreement of sorts with the beasts, in which they are allowed to go about their business as long as they never cross the village's boundaries. However, this precarious balance is upset when a headstrong young man, Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix), decides to find out what lies outside Covington, and unwittingly invites the wrath of the creatures upon the town. The Village also stars Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, Judy Greer, and Bryce Dallas Howard; both Kirsten Dunst and Ashton Kutcher were at one time attached to the project, but both left the cast before filming began.

Ok. I watched this movie and it was a little less exiting cause a friend told me what happend in the end. I warn all "Do no let anyone give away anything that involves Shyamalan" his movies are meant to surprise, thats what makes them awesome movies to see. Jouquin Phoenix and Adrian Brody are AMAZING actors. I love this movie because it is a truly touching story with great characters and a surprise ending. See it, what have you go to lose? Also this has a rare romantic vision of TRUE love. This is an amazing story.
This movie rocked! The more I watched it the more I liked it. M. Night Shayamalan is a GENUIS beyond any doubt. You get so connected to the characters. All of the actors earn awards for their amazing performances. When the movie ends you will think "What, it's over!" You will think about this for DAYS afterwords. Just see it. And if you don't like it see it again. This is one of my favorite movies. See it, what have you got to lose?
If you've ever wanted to be deeply touched by a film... this is it. As always, Night's talent in directing and writing comes brilliantly alive when fused with James Newton Howard's hauntingly beautiful score. Although marketed as "horror", it is nothing short of a romantic drama taking place in a village surrounded by a cold, ghostly woods that makes the relationships of the people within seem all the warmer - until the coldness creeps in from the outside, drawn by secrets of pain left to fester for far too long. More than anything else, this is about human nature and way we let the things we dread hurt ourselves - and others - more and more by hiding them from the people we love. It’s about skeletons in the closets. Secrets. But ultimately about the human condition, and the healing power of love.
This movie was absolutely wonderful.Bryce Howard and Joaquin Phoenix deserve countless awards. You go into the movie thinking it will be scary but it turns out to be more of an ironic, philosophical masterpiece. The concept of how being afraid of what is outside of your walls takes energy away from being careful of what is right beside you. Also, the village made to take future generations into an innocent society is,in truth, more corrupt than the real world.People that give this movie less than 5 stars don't understand how it is a thriller for how it makes you deeply think about the world we live in. Absolutely wonderful! I am only a teenager and this movie will forever stick out as one of the most touching and pyschological movies I have and will ever see-not like other gory, meaningless movies that seem to be clogging up theatres today.
This movie rocked! The actors all deserved awards for their fantastic performances. Adrian Brody is one of the most convincing actors I have ever seen. This is a thriller that will leave you thinking, you will have to watch it again. M. Night Shyamalan is a genuis. The next Hitchcock of the generation. The reason people don't like this one as much is because they are'nt thinking deep enough. If you look at it plainly it looks like a simple story with a simple plot. But if you think about it it is one of the most mind bending stories of all time. See it.
The most amazing move you will ever see. The sound track is so mysterious and suspenseful the song The Gravel Road is most amazing I have The Village movie poster in my room I love this movie docent matter what other say just give it a try for me :)
This movie had me thinking that it was a real monster in the woods that everybody was afraid of, but it was just some person hanging around. It was very creative so the four stars is for creativity but the minus a star for not good horror...
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this movie. This movie deals with how to preserve our innocence in an evil world. Even though the trailer seems like a creature thriller, it is more of a romantic drama, with a love story at its core. The villagers in Covington Woods strive to preserve its community and prevent members from dealing with the 'creatures' Those-We-Don't-Speak-Of. This movie has a great twist in the end and features an excellent ensemble cast. Bryce Dallas Howard and Joaquin Phoenix are particularly excellent. If you expect a thriller, you may be disappointed; if you enjoy thought-provoking dramas, you would enjoy this movie. I enjoyed it a lot!
The Village is Shamalayn's most polished and beautiful work. All though many people hated it because it was advertised as the years 'horror fest.' In order to get people into the theater, he had to make it that way. It is symbolic, and truthful to every scene. it either shows you how horrible society is, and what desperate measures take to escape it, or it teaches you that people are very wussed out, and can't take life right off the back. I think this movie is unbelievably good, and i suggest it to all drama fans.
This is a very good movie, and maybe people don't get it but: IT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY SCARY!!!! Everyone walks away disappointed, but M. Night Shyamalan's films aren't made to make you pee your pants in agony. They are simply to make you think about things in ways you never imagined. Take The Sixth Sense for example. It isn't extremely scary, in fact it isn't very scary at all. However, it makes you really wonder when a huge change of events occurs at the end of the film. I LOVE scary movies, but I also appreciate the delicacy of fine writing.
This film was great. I saw this film with my friends in theaters we loved it. There were alot of scenes where it made you jump one of the scenes scared the living sh** out of me I grabbed my friends arm and that scared the sh** out of him. But there were a couple scenes were I all I wanted to do was walk out of the theater and get my money back the film does recover though. My friend and i didnt know the one chick was blind till half way threw the movie. M. Night Shamalan did get off topic. The previews made the film look like a monster movie but its not. The film was very similar to the film The 13th Warrior. Those of you that like twistes watch this. The monsters in the film look realy corny you realy cant help but to laph. You have to realy pay attention to understand the twist at the end.By the end all the clues come together. It a realy good movie after I watched I wanted to go see it again im gonna buy it when it comes out to dvd. If you havent seen it yet you probly should rent it then make up your mind on if it had a good ending or not.
This movie didn't get much credit. I found the atmosphere to be delightfully creepy, but done in a very realistic way. Well done twists and a solid plot. Don't expect the masterwork level of the Sixth Sense, but also don't expect the disappointing carelessness of "The (Cr)Happening."
THE VILLAGE was simply awful to watch! The movie did not meet my expectations at all. I expected the movie to be scary and have a good plot. I believe the actors good talents were put to waste. THE VILLAGE was supposed to be a horror movie but it turns out to be a suspense movie that has you on your tiptoes in the first five minutes. Then they reveal what the creature looks like causing you to become bored throughout the remainder of the movie. The movie is predictable and does not make you think about the plot. The movie stayed in the same spot throughout the whole hour and thirty minutes and only in the last 16 minutes one of the main characters leaves their environment outside of the woods. There were no valuable life lessons learned from this movie.
Great movie I have watched over and over and still I am not tired of it. Beatifully done. From the music to the great choice of actors. This movie was well thought out.
The Village has its tense moments, to be sure, but it is more of a love story than a horror film. I love it and it's a great date movie, but if you watch it expecting to get the bodily excretions scared out of you, you're going to be disappointed.
I thought this movie was awful. It did not have much of a plot to it and was hard to follow. I would not recommend anyone to waste their time watching this.......
I bought ¿The Village¿ because of the TV commercials. They made it look like it would hold the views interest, keep you in suspense, and keep you on the edge of your seat. Well, it did one of those things ¿ it kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the scary moment(s). Needless to say ¿ it NEVER happened. I had a friend tell me I would be supprised at the ending. Also, they told me it seemed like a very long time to get there. They were right on both accounts; the ending was a supprise, a disappointment, and it left me with a feeling of how I wasted my time watching this movie and made me feel like I wasted my money purchasing it. The movie was unrealistic. How can a blind girl do all she did in this movie? The answer ¿ ONLY IN THE MOVIES. The cover boast this movie is from the creator of Signs, Unbreakable, and The Sixth Sense. I did purchase and watch The Sixth Sense. This was a great movie. I guess I thought it would be equal to The Sixth Sense. NO COMPARISON. To compare this movie to The Sixth Sense or even mention it in the same conversation is a crime. After seeing this movie I have no ambition to buy, rent, or watch Signs or Unbreakable.
I thought this movie was so incredibly boring. There was not much of a story to it and it was neither scary nor romantic. I think it was just an all around bad movie.
When they showed the previews for this, I felt like I had to see it and know what exactly are those 'creatures over in the woods' are. I went to see it with a friend and we both got scared. The movie was a bit boring and I was just thinking to myself 'come on show something scary not the boring talk' and during somewhat half of the beginning, middle and a little near the end there was some scary scenes but the rest I didn't understand and get of what was the big 'secret' some or most of the towns people were hiding in some box which the mother of a character near the beginning or middle will show. The movie was okay and the things in the woods look (glismpse of one of the trailers you'll see something behind its back. Or when seeing the movie its going to show its face or just say its the front part of its side which gives away some the suspense). I still enjoyed it.
Well, I say this film is okay, but somewhat horrible movie. It didn't make sense at the ending, the monsters were incredibly fake, and, I don't know why Shyamalan took the risk of having such good actors in a sort of okay movie. But still, watch it and... try to enjoy it.
A total bore, so unbelievable that as noted by another reviewer, it truely was an insult to the viewer's intelligence. A poor, drawn out version of the Twilight Zone.
The Village could have been a lot better. It was rated as a thriller movie but instead it turned out to be a romance story. My friend and I waited a month to see this movie and when we went, we were disappointment. The trailers to this movie made it seem like a horror story. It was suppose to be my first scary movie to see in the theater. I have seen some of M. Night Shyamalan movies and I think he could of made this movie more interesting. Also when it ended, you think to yourself “Is it really over?” It seems like there will be a sequel, but there won’t because we already know who the creatures are. M. Night Shyamalan should have put more time and effort in to it.
