Overview

Producer-director Ken Burns and frequent collaborator Lynn Novick -- they shared an Emmy for Baseball in 1994 -- explore the stories of the Greatest Generation in this epic documentary film. Vivid eyewitness accounts of the harrowing realities of life on the front lines during World War II intertwine with recollections of Americans who remained at home and did their best to carry on with life as usual while their fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons were overseas. Extras exclusive to this DVD presentation include: "Making The War"; deleted scenes; commentary by Burns and Novick; interview outtakes that expand stories told by Quentin Aanenson, Daniel Inouye, Paul Fussell, Katherine Phillips-Singer, and others; biographies, including now-and-then photos of participants in the series; and educational resources.

    Shocking but Necessary

To quote Ken Burns, this overview of WWII is a "necessary" look at the war. I haven't even seen this particular documentary of his yet, but have read the book version. It is the most vivid and personal account of the war I have ever read out of dozens. While quite graphic, I have had to set it down and try to focus on more pleasant thoughts, and even sickening in parts, it is also heartwarming and relevant to our times, both as a counterpoint to the war we are currently involved with, and to show how our modern world and societies developed. We owe the people who contributed these stories our gratitude, our attention, and our very lives.

Hard of hearing left out again!

Very good footage, lots of inside stuff on personal happenings. Just can't enjoy it if I can't hear it.

    amazing

This is an amazing touching story of World War II. Hearing the veteran's and their families heartfelt stories will stay with me. I am proud of my country and what our troops and citizens did during the war. Thank you!
