A man struggles to get a grip on a life that's spinning out of control in this emotional comedy drama. Dave Spritz (Nicolas Cage) is a television weatherman on a high-profile Chicago news program. Professionally, Dave is doing just fine -- he makes great money for a job that demands little effort, and he has a shot at an assignment with a network morning news and chat show. But Dave's personal life leaves a lot to be desired -- his father, respected author Robert Spritzel (Michael Caine), is in failing health, he's divorced from his wife, Noreen (Hope Davis), and his relationship with his children is tenuous at best, especially his overweight daughter, Shelly (Gemmenne de la Pena). If Dave is to land his new job, he'll have to move to New York City, and with his time in Chicago running short, he dedicates himself to trying to salvage his ties with his family before it's too late, though he discovers this is even harder than he imagines.

The acting was very good in this film -- especially Nicholas Cage. However, this movie was a huge disappointment overall. It was not funny, it was not touching, it was not dramatic .... left our family with an overall feeling of empty. The good parts never came. Sorry, Nicholas we'll catch you the next time around and hope for better!
i thought it was bit sentimental.. gradual.. Makes you think. It's funny too actually. I guess some people might not be into this kind of movie but I am. It reminded me of well.. Lost in Translation kind of mood. Just how the story plays out, not fast pace, makes you little emotional, something that stands out from other ones.. etc.
I loved this movie, it's very funny. If you're a Cage fan then it's highly recommended.
I love Nicholas Cage and have enjoyed most of his other movies, but this one was a total waste of time and $. We kept watching because Nicholas Cage is such a good actor (the problem with the film is not his acting ability) that we kept thinking that any moment the film would turn around and pleasantly surprise us. It never did. It was oddly done somewhat satirical. We had no feeling of closure, satisfaction, or emotional uplift even at the end. What was the point of the story? What was the maker of the film trying to get us to "feel" or "experience"? Sorry to be so brutal but I would recommend you do not waste your time. Sorry Nicholas, but we will catch you the next time around and hope for better!
I really enjoyed this oddly-humored film by Gore Verbinski. I viewed the feature when it first came out on DVD and loved it. The film in my mind is along the lines of Lord of War, where it is a story of a man and his thoughts and struggles with work, life and family. There's a serious side to this film, but like Lord of War, it's chalk full of comedy. I like how Cage's character narrates his everyday job describtion and how easy it is to just read off a monitor and only work for a couple hours a day for over 200thousand dollars a year without even having a degree in meteorology. So if you like Lord of War, check this film out...
This movie is not the light-hearted comedy it was marketed as. Look, Nic Cage has a bow and arrow in the city, that looks silly and funny and cute. The production company should be ashamed because, while "The Weather Man" does not feature uprorious, side-splitting humor, it is a very nicely defined dark comedy of the same pedigree as Alexander Payne's films "Sideways". Not a "happy" movie but one worth watching for mood setting and wonderfully uncomfortable performances.
