Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
This much-acclaimed series may be based on the American presidency, but our European allies got first dibs on the DVD -- much to the disappointment of devoted domestic fans, some of whom even bought special players to view the Region 2 discs. Now the rest of us can boot up the debut season, which was definitely worth the wait. Far from seeming dated, The West Wing has aged remarkably well for a show premiered at the turn of the century in a pre-9/11 world. Headed by Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet, a strong ensemble cast demonstrates that office politics are the same everywhere; things just have greater repercussions when your office happens to be the White House. Rob Lowe more than makes up for some bad career moves with his sly turn as deputy communications director Sam Seaborn. Allison Janney actually makes us care about C. J. Cregg, Bartlet's beleaguered press secretary. And John Spencer puts a taut emotional spin on the chief of staff, recovering boozehound Leo McGarry, who sacrifices his marriage to his career. In retrospect, several Season 1 story lines seem eerily prophetic. Among the global crises Bartlet must finesse are a nuclear showdown between India and Pakistan, an American plane shot down by terrorists, and another downed U.S. plane in Iraq. Copious special features include two meaty making-of documentaries and a reel we'd love to see the real White House produce: "Gag Order," a collection of outtakes and bloopers.

For my money, this is still the greatest show in the history of television. Aaron Sorkin is not only the best television and film writer in the world, but is in my view the best working writer we have. The first season of the series does an amazing job of introducing characters and making you love them almost instantly.

    Brilliant!!!

I think the West Wing is a brilliant, often funny look at the inner workings of the White House, the role of the President, the White House hierarchy and the craziness of the political landscape. The series addresses many issues and the bitter divide between the party in power and the opposing party, much of which is starkly evident today. You don't have to be a genius to understand the West Wing, even though it's sophisticated entertainment. The writers are exceptional.

    Holding up nicely

This is a great series and a great value with 2-sided discs. Many of the ideas that seemed out of reach when the series was broadcast have been realized. It tremendous fun to see what we wished for in a different time. The actors are, of course, perfect in their roles.

    more from this reviewer

    As excellent now as ever!

What fun revisiting favorite scenes and moments in the first season of West Wing! If you loved the series, if you loved the characters - buy this series! (And if you hated the cliffhanger at the end of Season I, buy Season II at the same time!)

    the smartest writing around

Thank goodness for TV on DVD - I miss this show very much. The writing, the acting, the directing - everything is pitch perfect. Billed as a drama, this is also one of the wittiest shows to hit network television. You learn an incredible amount about politics and how the government works - all while enjoying the characters and great writing. I recommend buying Season 1 and 2 together because the Season 1 finale is quite the cliffhanger. JUST BUY IT!

    West Wing wins in landslide!

This is THE best show on television right now, so it is only fiting that the DVD set is also spectacular. The behind the scenes-special features are great! Thank you Aaron Sorkin!

The best TV has to offer

I must admit that I watch a lot of TV, too much really, and the vast majority of the time I feel guilty about it. But the one show that I never feel guilty watching is The West Wing. There's not a character I don't like, or an episode that does not make me laugh then cry. The writing is at times humorous and at other times inspiring. Finally, I learn something new about government, or people, or the world at large every episode. Who can have guilt over that.

    Incredible!!!!

I can't get anything done. I really thought I knew the characters until this. YOu get an opportunity to watch and watch again picking up on things that we don't always get when it was on TV. I keep watching and rewatching. I love it. I am waiting for the 2nd season to come out on DVD.

    where's the VHS?

I love this series and yet wonder why they have excluded the viewers that prefer VHS. Many of us would prefer VHS (or have it in both formats) for convenience.

    West WIng Review

From the beginning The West Wing has been a show to reflect and learn from. Even though the characters are fictional, there is no doubt that many wish they could be real. If you are interested in learning about the concepts of our government purchase this series, sit back and learn, while enjoying.
