Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
This much-acclaimed series may be based on the American presidency, but our European allies got first dibs on the DVD -- much to the disappointment of devoted domestic fans, some of whom even bought special players to view the Region 2 discs. Now the rest of us can boot up the debut season, which was definitely worth the wait. Far from seeming dated, The West Wing has aged remarkably well for a show premiered at the turn of the century in a pre-9/11 world. Headed by Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet, a strong ensemble cast demonstrates that office politics are the same everywhere; things just have greater repercussions when your office happens to be the White House. Rob Lowe more than makes up for some bad career moves with his sly turn as deputy communications director Sam Seaborn. Allison Janney actually makes us care about C. J. Cregg, Bartlet's beleaguered press secretary. And John Spencer puts a taut emotional spin on the chief of staff, recovering boozehound Leo McGarry, who sacrifices his marriage to his career. In retrospect, several Season 1 story lines seem eerily prophetic. Among the global crises Bartlet must finesse are a nuclear showdown between India and Pakistan, an American plane shot down by terrorists, and another downed U.S. plane in Iraq. Copious special features include two meaty making-of documentaries and a reel we'd love to see the real White House produce: "Gag Order," a collection of outtakes and bloopers.
Barnes & Noble - Michael Wickersheimer
The West Wing won both the Emmy and Golden Globe awards as television's top drama for this second season, which originally aired on NBC between October 2000 and May 2001. With George W. Bush succeeding Bill Clinton in the real Oval Office midway through the season, one might have expected this fictional look at an American president and his closest advisers to undergo a creative crisis. But with series creator Aaron Sorkin continuing to write or co-write all 22 episodes, The West Wing managed to stay on message and rise to the challenge. Sorkin marvelously maintains the show's ripped-from-the-headlines topicality, and some of the story lines -- downed soldiers in Iraq, a fleeing president in Haiti, bomb-toting terrorists, lost spacecraft on Mars -- feel uncomfortably prescient. Still, it is the aftermath of the Season 1-closing assassination attempt on President Jed Bartlett (Martin Sheen) that propels much of the season's events and, more important, its overall mood. Presidential aide Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), the main victim of the assassins' bullets, spends most of the season dealing with the psychological aftermath and his own emotional outbursts, while chief of staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer) tries his best to get Josh the help he so desperately needs. Meanwhile, C. J. Cregg (Alison Janney) continues to battle both political foes and friends. Stockard Channing continues to portray First Lady Abbey Bartlett on a recurring basis this season, and Marlee Matlin adds a bit of spice as sassy pollster Joey Lucas. Janney and Whitford both won Emmys for their supporting roles, while Channing, Spencer, and Richard Schiff all earned nominations. Sheen and Rob Lowe -- as communications director Sam Seaborn -- were both recognized in the Lead Actor category. Also singled out was Oliver Platt, whose late-season, multi-episode turn as White House counsel Oliver Babish was good enough to inspire CBS to build a legal show around him, the short-lived Queens Supreme, which lasted only three episodes in January 2003. In addition to the episodes, The West Wing Season 2 set offers a walk through the White House set with both the director and set designer, a behind-the-scenes look at the season finale, a lighthearted bloopers reel, and deleted scenes.
