Overview

The third season of the Emmy-winning drama The West Wing started with a special episode that addressed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, titled "Isaac and Ishmael." This set contains that program as well as every other episode from the third season. Major storylines during the course of the year included the ongoing political fallout from President Bartlett hiding his health issues from the American public, and a series of international incidents that series creator Aaron Sorkin created in order to comment on the volatile real-life situations transpiring at the time.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) hits the campaign trail in Season 3 of Aaron Sorkin's acclaimed, Emmy-winning prime-time drama about the inner workings of the White House. The 22 episodes of the 2001-2 season, collected here on four discs, include some of the most memorable of the series to date; among them is the heart-wrenching special episode "Isaac and Ishmael" -- wherein the president's staff attempts to put world events into context for teenagers -- which was written by Sorkin immediately following the tragic events of September 11th. The Bartlet administration's campaign against terrorism and a tough reelection campaign provide the running threads linking most of this season's episodes, including the season opener, "Manchester Parts I and II"; "Bartlet for America"; "100,000 Airplanes"; and "The Two Bartlets." Season 2's primary recurring characters, political operative Ainsley Hayes (Emily Procter) and Vice President John Hoynes (Tim Matheson), figure prominently this season in the episodes "Ways and Means," "Night Five," and the absorbing "Stirred." As always, the heart of the show is the interaction between Sheen's President Bartlet and his outspoken team members: Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer), Director of Communications Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Press Secretary C. J. Clegg (Allison Janney), and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford). Notable stars making guest appearances include Oliver Platt, Laura Dern, Mark Harmon, Hal Holbrook, and James Brolin. This season's episodes have the breathless pace and crackling dialogue fans crave, qualities that also make The West Wing one of television’s dominant dramatic staples.
