Once a while, a film resurfaces or is come upon that proves to be incredibly effective and powerful not because of any specific aspect of its plot or characters, but because during the passage of time, history has proven the film to be either prescient or an eerie parallel to current events. Produced in the mid-'70s, The Wind and the Lion, when viewed through the prism of today, is practically a mirror image of goings-on in the Middle East. The film, written and directed by John Milius, tells the true story with some adjustments of an American woman Candice Bergen and her children, who are abducted in Morocco by a Berber chieftain played by Sean Connery. This act leads to an overblown military response by the Americans, led by President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of State John Hay played incredibly effectively by Brian Keith and John Huston, respectively. Keith in particular captures the spirit of Roosevelt to a tee. In their desire to assert the power of America across the globe in a re-election year for Roosevelt, the Marines invade Morocco and take over. Insert Bush for Roosevelt and Osama bin Laden for the Connery character, and it's downright creepy. It's to the film's benefit that modern viewers can draw these parallels, because there are a lot of holes that are covered over by them. Bergen's character goes through a change that isn't really very believable, and Connery as the chieftain loses some authenticity every time he speaks with his usual Scottish accent. It gives off the aura of a sort of low-budget epic. The sets and costumes are all impressive, but the overall look of the film seems muted. The ending in particular is rather powerful, and Milius puts dialogue in the mouths of his actors that sends chills down the spine when one is reminded that history is more or less repeating itself.

    Brian Keith is the Definitive Teddy Roosevelt

    Great plot, great characters, wonderful soundtrack and sweeping settings make this one move that will appeal to just about every audience. Brian Keith is a thoroughly believable President Theodore Roosevelt, Candice Bergen is perfect as a strong-willed American expatriate taken hostage with her children by a Berber rebel chieftain, and Sean Connery is more convincing than you might expect as the Berber. Not especially accurate history, but that hardly matters. I have no idea if the overall depiction of Islam is accurate, but the presentation on the whole is definitely thought-provoking and timely even so many years later.

    One of the Most Highly Under-rated Movies of All Time

    This is an EXCELLENT movie! It has it all...great action, great story line, great actors (Sean Connery and Candice Bergen), breath-taking cinematography, beautiful musical score, a wonderful romantic tale- the chemistry between Connery's and Bergen's characters is great...and a plot that applies as aptly today as it did when it was made nearly thirty years ago, (although it was set during the turn of the twentieth century, during Teddy Roosevelt's era). GREAT FILM! I can't recommend it enough!

    Excellent DVD of fine film

    An outstanding film gets a terrific treatment on DVD. My only complaint is I wish there was more of a documentary regarding the making of the film instead of the short film that was made during the making of it. Still, we finally get to see one of the finest adventure films ever in widescreen, along with one of Connery's greatest performances. Bergen's a bit stiff, but she hadn't developed as an actress by 1975. Then again, it could have been her part. However, kudos go to Brian Keith, who steals the show, which wasn't the easiest thing to do, when you consider his scenes were all played with John Huston. All in all, an outstanding adventure film.

    Lawrence of Arabia

    a story richly told

    This is fine story well told. And it's a lot of fun.

    I saw it when it first came out, and I liked it. Now, after a second viewing, and the director's cut, I respect and treasure it.

    I think it matters that Director Milius wrote it. I like very much how as the plot unfolds, the time and place are continually enriched by the dialog and characterizations surrounding the three main characters - Connery, Keith, and Bergen, as they walk through the plot.

    One thing of particular interest, which I did not remember when I first saw the movie well over 20 years ago, was the ransom.

    At the very least, the movie is an enjoyable way to see two cultures and people doing their thing.

    BTW, I originally watched it again only for the photography. Alongside Lawrence of Arabia. Both were worth revisiting.

    Need DVD version of this fine film

    This is an excellent adventure movie, with an underlying love story. Outstanding acting and great quality production. What it needs is a DVD version.

    Waiting for the Widescreen DVD to make it 5 stars

    Excellent adventure with rousing romantic score. Character play and stars will have women watching it too (so says my wife). Well worth the money, but it's formatted for TV screen and loses its cinematic impact. Put it on DVD in Widescreen format and I'll buy that too.

    A Sweeping Desert Adventure

    Milius is well-known for the macho, jingoistic slant to his films (Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn). The era of Gunboat Diplomacy is exceptionally well suited to this approach. Candice Bergen and Sean Connery are commendable for delivering memorable performances, but it is Brian Keith who steals the show. He will remain forever in my mind as Teddy Roosevelt. The film made me curious to research the era -- the highest compliment! The musical score itself is a character -- easily better than my recent favorite, Howard Shore's exemplary work for The Two Towers . The musical themes are equally as grand as the classic Lawrence of Arabia, from which I don't doubt the composer found inspiration. This film was shown on TNT in widescreen/letterbox format -- where is the VHS widescreen, if the DVD is still unavailable?

    A ''Must have movie'' for your collection

    I saw this movie not long after it came out. It was one of the first I bought in VHS format when they came out. The story line is great, acting is great. Candice is great (and beautiful as ever in this movie) and Sean is at his best. Get it, you won't regret it. I can't imagine why its taking so long to come out in DVD, I'm waiting to buy it.

    Stunning

    This is an awesome film in terms of cinematography and soundtrack, and has memorable performances by Bergen, Connery, Huston, and Keith. It covers (with an expected amount of creative license)events in Morocco at the turn of the century. Included in the story are sultans, palaces, battleships, United States Marines, European troops, Islamic tribesmen, lions...you name it! This movie is a must...and WHEN will it be availabe on DVD? Does anyone know?

    Lets See It In DVD!

    This movie is one on Connery's best! Not to mention the rest of the upstanding cast. The movie brings to light an era in history with great adventure, intensity and artistic interpretation. It needs to be brought out on DVD though. I look forward to owning the DVD.

    Excellent 1900 period piece with superb acting.

    This excellent film centers around the early 1900's and the United States. Theodore Roosevelt is president of an emerging new world power. The story relates to a moslem rogue (old world) with different ideals. A delightful relationship develops between the two when the moslem rogue kidnaps an american woman and her children. They both learn some rules of life from each other including honor (different views), respect and ways of life. All aspects of the film are true to the period which makes it very enjoyable besides the excellent acting by Sean Connery and Candice Bergan.
