Overview

Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy Diana Ross is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz Richard Pryor, a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow Michael Jackson in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man Nipsey Russell caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion Ted Ross posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West a sweatshop tyrant before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz 1939, with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls. ~ Derek Armstrong

A Great Version of "OZ" filled with soul and Rock 'N Roll!

Back in 1975, "The Wiz" soared onto Broadway and immediately became a smash hit. Despite all the criticism the movie gets, it's still an awesome film. I loved Diana Ross as Dorothy. Listening to her sing "Home" always makes me cry. The music is great to listen to as she journey's through the jazzin' land of Oz. Any OZ fan will love "The Wiz".

    A Sensational, Soulful Musical Masterpiece

This movie, I remember watching as a child and being fascinated; watching it as an adult, I have enjoyed it even more!! The music, the creativity, and the talent was on a plateau of its own. It just reminded me of how much soul, color, and creativity we have in our blood. I loved it then, and I love it even more and have a greater appreciation for it now.

    The Best Movie Ever!!!!

I'm watching this movie right now and I watched it last night too. It's simply the best movie ever. I know it word for word! :) I used to watch it when I was younger and now I'm 19 and still in love with it. I know my parents watched it when they were younger too. It's a family favorite! Just the best!

    more from this reviewer

You must add this movie to your Michael Jackson collection!

This movie took me a long ways back. I was only 7 or 8 when my mom took me to see The Wiz. I really enjoyed and loved seeing my idol Michael Jackson! He was funny as the Scarecrow. The cast was really awesome, the music, the costumes and the dancers were totally hot! We lost 4 cast members from this movie, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne and the King of Pop Michael Joseph Jackson. Let's remember them for giving us their music and acting. Without them they would've not given us the Wiz. I recommend this video to any who is a die hard M.J. fan. Let's take time out since Black History Month is almost over to reminisce about these wonderful entertainers who gave all to their fans. Nipsey, Richard, Lena and Michael, thank you so much. You all are so missed by the fans who loved you. Rest in peace my friends.

    Must see-AWESOME!!!!-J.Summerise

The Wiz is a great movie that has a star studded cast among many other things. This movie stars people such as Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and many others. There are so many reason why love this movie to death. It has inspirational song, great costumes, and an awesome soundtrack and there is nothing that can ever compare. If I can describe this movie in one word it would be timeless. I feel that a movie's ultimate goal is to be timeless; Sidney Lumet (writer) and Rob Cohen (producer) achieved that goal. They set up the plots perfectly; they make you feel like you are in the movie. The reason I love this move is because every time I watch it, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It is just one of those movies that you can just pop in and watch with family and enjoy over and over again. To me, the most memorable song was a song sung by Diana Ross, it was entitled "Home". Dorothy sings this song on her way home from the world of OZ. The reason I think this song is so memorable because it relates to anyone when they are away from home and want to be back. Another one of my favorite songs is "You Can't Win" sung by one of my favorite people, Michael Jackson. It speaks to people because there are people that don't want us to succeed in life; they would do anything to see us fail. This movie in general makes you feel every emotion including sadness, happiness, appreciation, and most of all love. That why this movie is a great purchase, it is a great movies for you and your family to enjoy together.

    Loved the movie

My daughter loves watching this movie. She became a Michael Jackson fan at the time of his untimely death. Michael's performance is great. I've been a fan for years.

My only compliant is that the movie is starting to freeze and will then skip to the next scene.

Michael is so cute and funny in this movie!

I remember watching this movie when it first was shown years ago. Was so glad it went to dvd and now I can watch it over whenever I want. Kinda makes me sad at times when michael's part comes up because I start thinking about the great loss, but then I remember and think about what he left behind for all of his fans to enjoy thru his music, videos and dance!..His legacy will go on forever as far as I'm concern! This dvd is great and would recommend it to all who love MJ and those who just would like to see it!

    Cheaply Made and Not Magical

Almost everything is wrong in this film. The lighting is terrible, the costumes and effects are cheap, and the story isn't exciting. Plus, this version of Oz is so real world, it doesn't feel like Dorothy traveled to another place and it lacks magic. Only a few scenes and songs in "The Wiz" are good. Still, I give "The Wiz" a thumbs down.

    Soulful

I remember watching The Wiz when I was a child and loving the songs. Especially Michael's singing and the song 'Brand New Day'. I would dance through the house. 20 years later I find myself doing the same, but appreciating the music even more! This movie is rich to the ears and the eyes. I wish it came on t.v. annually. Can't wait to get the soundtrack!

more than just somewhere over the rainbow

just the songs alone make you rethink and consider your life and the possibilities in soo many ways. the wiz is a roller coaster ride of enjoyment, inspiration and self-clarity. the wizard of oz showed the meaning of family but the wiz teaches you to look deep inside yourself for all the meanings of things you will come encounter with. friendship and self perserverence are fundamental elements in this movie. although this is an all black cast, the wiz can, will and does reach out to all.
