I love the myth of the Werewolf, & because of that, I'm very picky as to what werewolf films I'll watch &/or own in my collection. Some werewolf films that are considered classics, I consider film fodder. This, however, was amazing! The 2nd best werewolf film that I've ever seen (the 1st being the original The WolfMan w/ Lon Chaney Jr.). This is a true revisioning of the original-fitting that Universal produced it! The acting? Superb. The plot? Gripping. The makeup by the great Rick Baker? I have no words, see for yourself...
W/out giving up any spoilers, I loved the 'twist' on the Sir John (Hopkins) character. When all is considered; plot, cast, production, FX, score (by the great Danny Elfman), screenplay, & direction this boosts into the atmosphere of Cinimatic Genius!
Kudos to BN for shipping the DVD quickly. I ordered it, they shipped it, I received it 1,2,3. Excellent!
But the movie itself? The focus was all about the Wolfman himself. The characters raced through the dialog as if in a hurry to get back to the graphics and the wolfman's ferocity.
The movie could have focused equally well on character development instead of cutting so many vivid details out.
If you want to know more about the characters, the setting, the motives, the sultry eroticism ... read the book. The movie omitted a lot of the sexuality that was presented in the book, skipping past it as if shy ... but blatant gore seemed to be wholly splayed onto the screen with indulgence. As for the movie, only Hugo Weaving seemed to be truly gripping in his role; he carried his dialog in a tone that was measured and precise; his poignant stare backed up his words.
It is a movie that involves gore. I'll say that much. You'd better have a strong stomach for visuals of people gutted out ~ which I do and I give a three out of five based on graphics, Hugo's resolute presence, and Emily's passionate presentation in the final climactic cliff hanger.
