Overview

The television host of a popular cooking show, Robert Danvers (Peter Sellers) has a real penchant for women. After one episode, he finds Marion (Goldie Hawn) changing from a wedding dress to street clothes. Instantly deciding to get to her and "take over" before the groom, Jimmy (Nicky Henson) has another opportunity, Robert invites her to his bachelor pad, a specially designed command center for his romantic adventures. He turns on the English gentleman's charm, only to have Marion laugh and suggest forthright that they sleep together. She moves in the following day and the two vacation in France on the Riviera and tour the wine country before returning to London. Upon their return, Robert proposes to %Marion; she rejects him in favor of Jimmy, however, who has sworn faithfulness to her and given up cheating forever.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
"Inconsequential" may have been invented for There's a Girl in My Soup, the kind of fluffy sex comedy that was a Broadway staple for decades. Soup was different in its day, as the heroine of the piece was not a Doris Day-type eternal virgin, but a sexual being who not only gives herself freely to a man but is upfront and unapologetic about her willingness. The movie has little going for it beyond this premise, and it wanders rather aimlessly, if agreeably, before abruptly resolving its insignificant conflicts. Of course, plotting doesn't have to be the strong point of a sex comedy, but humor should be. There are not very many laugh-out-loud moments in Soup, neither by way of jokes or of situation, and the characters are not so original as to generate laughs on their own. Fortunately, Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn bring enough of their natural ability to the roles to overcome this lack of real humor. Sellers underplays nicely, and Hawn is charming throughout. There's no real chemistry between them, but they're still pleasant company. The supporting cast is also a big plus , with a particularly good turn from Tony Britton and nice contributions from the likes of Diana Dors and Nicky Henson. Soup's best moments are its first ones, but the rest of the film is at least genial.
