There's Something About Mary

Overview

Fox gives the Farrelly brothers' most notorious success the deluxe treatment with this two-disc package, presented in full-screen without the film's original aspect ratio. There's Something About Mary: The Collectors' Edition ups the ante on the previous DVD of the film by retaining the original disc's commentary track, but adding 19 minutes of footage left on the cutting room floor, all with newly recorded commentary from the brothers. In addition to that, the Farrellys provide new, scene-specific anecdotes for ...

In addition to that, the Farrellys provide new, scene-specific anecdotes for some of the film's most memorable scenes, and co-writers Ed Decter and John J. Strauss provide their own separate commentary on the film. Featurettes on disc two run the gamut of cable-oriented extras and promotional materials. The AMC network's Backstory: There's Something About Mary is included, as is MTV's Music Video Awards presentation to the film for Best Fight, and Comedy Central's behind-the-scenes profile of the film on their program Reel Comedy. Featurettes and bonus interviews are in no short supply, either: "Exposing Themselves" profiles the cast members Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, and Chris Elliot; "Franks and Beans" features W. Earl Brown; "Touchdown" focuses solely on Brett Favre; and "Puffy, Boobs, and Balls" is Harland Williams' contribution to the fray. A behind-the scenes diary ("Getting Behind Mary") is included, the film's original Claymation credit sequence is restored, and if that isn't enough, trailers and full promotional materials for the film are on display as well, including the music videos "Buttercup" (clip lip-synched by the cast) and "Everyday Should Be a Holiday."

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Some movies make you smile, some make you laugh, and some make you laugh so hard you spill Milk Duds all over your date. The Farrelly brothers' There's Something About Mary falls solidly in the latter category. Few films have violated so many taboos and been so successful in their quest for laughs. While scatological and intermittently offensive, There's Something About Mary redeems itself by being both legitimately funny and surprisingly sweet. With a couple of notable exceptions -- the "handicapped" Tucker's flailing becomes gratuitous -- this is a movie with real heart. Amidst the I-can't-believe-they-did-that shocks, you find yourself rooting for Ben Stiller's Ted and Cameron Diaz's Mary to end up together -- they're the most honest, caring people in the film. There's Something About Mary also merits attention for its less-controversial laughs, such as the amusingly absurd musical narrative provided by Jonathan Richman, or Bret Favre's hilarious surprise cameo. Not all the jokes are precisely on-target, but with so many that are, Mary's transgressions are easily forgotten. To say it's not for prudish tastes is a grave understatement. But There's Something About Mary is truly an excellent comedy, one that proves the considerable latitude afforded filmmakers in the permissive late 1990s resulted in more than just an inordinate amount of fart jokes.

    There's Something About Mary

There's Something About Mary, a Farrelly Bothers film, starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon is the hilarious tale of a high school nerd who years later looks up the nice girl who almost was his date to the prom until a disastrous bathroom accident involving a zipper and "Beans & Franks," sends him to the ER instead. The next week Mary moved away and Ted never saw or heard from her again. Ted never forgets her and always wondered if they had a chance of being together. He somehow finds her and attempts to rekindle a friendship but without seeming like an obsessed stocker. The film is full of raunchy jokes and big laughs. This is one of my favorite comedies.

    Okay

The Movie was funny and the acting was okay. I loved Ben stiller, but i am not a big fan of cameron. This movie would have been better if the casting of Mary was Differnt, but still overall was a entertaining move

    Funny and Sweet

extremely funny and entertaining romantic comedy about a missed opportunity. Repeated viewings are very rewarding. Having seen many John Waters films many many years ago, this movie did not seem raunchy at all, but it did maintain a high level of fun.
