Overview

This haunted house chiller is the second feature from Dark Castle Entertainment, the mid-budget outfit put together in 1999 to remake the cheesy horror genre pictures of William Castle by his daughter, Terry Castle, and producers Gilbert Adler, Robert Zemeckis, and Joel Silver. Financially ravaged and widowed by a fire that is consuming him with guilt, Arthur Kriticos Tony Shalhoub is left to raise two kids on his own: beautiful teenager Kathy Shannon Elizabeth and grade school student Bobby Alec Roberts. Good news suddenly drops into their lives when a lawyer visits and reveals that they have inherited a lavish home from a late uncle, Cyrus F. Murray Abraham, an eccentric ghost hunter. The Kriticos family moves into the remote house only to discover its odd secret: the dwelling contains a state-of-the-art, elaborate system of moving glass walls that trap spirits inside. Soon the ghosts, which can only be seen through the use of special high-tech spectacles, are loose in the elaborate contraption and are none too thrilled about their predicament. With the exits sealed, the family members try to learn the secret of Uncle Cyrus' bizarre mansion and survive supernatural assaults with the help of sassy housekeeper Maggie Rah Digga, neurotic psychic Rafkin Matthew Lillard, and Kalina Embeth Davidtz, an activist championing the civil rights of ghosts. The eyeglasses through which the spirits can be viewed in Thirteen Ghosts 2001 were part of a ballyhoo gimmick involving pairs of spectacles handed out to audiences for screenings of the 1960 original, which was presented in "Illusion-O."

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Shannon Elizabeth, Matthew Lillard, and F. Murray Abraham may be in the cast, but the real star of Thirteen Ghosts is a haunted house. It's a true spook house of the future, especially when compared to the deadly domicile in low-tech showman William Castle's 1960 horror classic. The simple story involves a family that inherits a legitimate haunted home from an eccentric, ghost-hunting uncle. Where the original 13 Ghosts abode was a traditionally creaky edifice, this film's ultramodern nightmare house is more like a gigantic puzzle box than a home. There are plenty of thrills to be had in this glass-walled house, and you can bet its unfortunate inheritors cast more than their share of stones. Apparitions appear early and often, running a grotesque gamut of gore as the film trades in suspense for nonstop action and top-notch special effects. The small ensemble cast -- including Tony Shalhoub as the mild-mannered father, Elizabeth as his daughter, Lillard as a the token psychic, and Rah Digga as a housekeeper -- spend most of the time screaming their hearts out and running for their lives. Abraham, on the other hand, plays the uncle with a kind of demonic calm. Ultimately, Thirteen Ghosts takes its unique contemporary flair from the restaging of a classic ghost chiller in a fresh setting. The DVD includes audio commentary and a making-of documentary.
Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas
Thirteen Ghosts is in essence a classic haunted house story, given some terrifically ingenious and grisly twists, in which a decent family man, already afflicted with tragedy and loss, finds within himself the courage and selflessness to save his family from evil.

    I Love This Movie!

For those who love horror books/movies, this is a must see! It scared the pants of me!
This movie starts off in a junkyard with scientists and a whole bunch of other people. They are ghost hunters and sadly, everyone of them except for this pyshic dude and a witch, ends up dying very gruesome deaths by the hands of a very evil and vicious ghost they called 'The Juggernaut.' Anyway, thsi scene ends and you come to a house and a happy family. the mom dies in a fire, leaving her two children and husband to survive on their own. the now smaller family + nanny find out that the husband's uncle(he's one of the people who died in the beginning.) died and left them his really awesome house. Excited, they go see it and find out that the uncle collected GHOSTS and they all reside in the basement (including the juggernaut from the beginning.), and there begins the race for their lives. They have to battle the ghosts who somehow got out of their special cages(watch out for the JACKEL), and the uncle who came back from the dead. Watch the movie and find out what happens to the family!
This movie is my favorite horror flick(so far)
I completely recommend this movie to Horror fans every where!
Have fun and enjoy! It is completely worth it!

    Do they really exist?

I saw this movie in the theater, the best place to see it! I thought it was great but I wouldn't call those horrifying charactors ghosts. I believe demons exist and that's what I'd call them. Demons are evil, ghosts are harmless. But the title is better than 13 Demons would be.

    An Amazingly scare movie

I watch horror movies all the time, it is the one type of movie I am always in the mood for. This movie was amazing! It had my heart pumping the first time and me hidding under a pillow, and I'm normally hard to scare with movies, this is not hte normal moive it is move with the pop-out scare, there is some blood, mature content, etc...but all in all this is an amazing move with a insanly twitsted plot.

    Totally SUPERBLESS!!!

I always loved ghost and scary stories, but not as scary as this movie. When I first watched this movie, I always hide under the cushion. What a STUPID movie! Not only is it like WAY too scary, it's also S-T-U-P-I-D. I'd give this movie below zero if I could! For those, who loved this movie, I recommend you to stop loving it and try another movie instead, such as 'The Others'. That's a sensible story, and much, much, much more CLEVER than this movie! What with the girl (dunno her name [didn't care, anyway]) gets killed because the moving glasses had 'stucked' her. Sorry Steve Beck (at least kind of me to even remember your name), but you are a totally minus 99-rated director!

    Supernaturally Arousing

Thirteen Ghosts kept me on the edge of my seat, with the gruesome posibility of reality lingering not far behind. The movie brought to light how eccentric individuals can tear at the very fabric of reality, and cause massive trama to those in which they are connected. AMAZING MOVIE.

    Awesome!

I love Tony Shalhoub. I've been into him since Wings and his new show (Monk) is great too. Check out his only X-Files guest appearance, creepy and sympathetic. He's a great supporting actor but who knew that he could carry a film. This movie was a different kind of haunted house movie. Since you could only see the ghosts if you were wearing the glasses, it was creepy to see everyone walking around not knowing what was out there. Especially disturbing was the scene with Shannon Elizabeth in the bathroom enjoying the new place while all around her is blood and a ghost that she can't see.

There isn't a better movie out there!

It's not just the house that's freaky, it's THE JACKAL. The 11th ghost. The one with the cage on her head. She was FREAKY! It was like she was around every corner! I've seen it at least 100 times!

THE BEST HORROR-THRILLER I'VE EVER SEEN

THE 13TH GHOST GHOST IS A GOOD MOVIE. IT KEEPS YOU GUESSING AND THINKING. IT WAS SCARY AND GOOD. MOST GHOST AND MONSTERS IN HORROR MOVIES JUST SNEAK UP ON PEOPLE AND KILL THEM. BUT YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT IS ACTUALLY GOING OUT HAUNTING AND CAPTURING THE GHOST. AND THE WAY THE HOUSE WAS SET-UP, THE WAY EVERY THING CAME TOGETHER WAS MIND BOGGLING. ITS THE KIND OF MOVIE THAT WHEN YOU GET FINISH WATCHING IT YOU WANT REWIND IT TO SEE WHAT YOU MISS. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!

    13 Ghosts

13 Ghosts is a really creepy movie. The events in the movie are dramafied for a true ghost lovers enjoyment.I suggest buying the DVD version, which includes a section that explains each of the 13 ghosts and how/why they were chosen for their part.It makes the movie seem better in my opinion. I deducted one point because the VHS version doesnt include the explaining section I mentioned before.
