Overview

Menacing Brazilian king of terror Coffin Joe returns to DVD in this exciting Fantoma release of his notorious shocker This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. Though the image as presented on this disc (letterboxed at 1.66:1) reveals the crude methods of production and questionable treatment of the original film elements over the 30 years since its initial release, the film nevertheless remains remarkably effective, almost aided in atmosphere by the scratchy, dirty image and constant hisses and pops that never quite let the soundtrack calm. Looking closely enough, the viewer can actually see the tape that holds the spliced celluloid together, lending an effectively crude and primal touch to the moody black-and-white photography and Marins' eerie visions. Though the image softens on focus occasionally, it remains fairly sharp throughout the majority of the presentation. Even through the film's numerous dark scenes, digital artifacting is scarce, and Marins' hell (the sole sequence filmed in color) screams at the viewer in vivid red hues that are nearly as agonizing as the tortured moans of its inhabitants, which bend the Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack nearly to the breaking point. With a remarkable number of extra features for an obscure, no-budget, 30-year-old Brazilian horror film, including an informative interview with Marins, a reproduction of an original Coffin Joe comic book, and multiple trailers for other Coffin Joe releases, Fantoma has done an excellent job of anticipating the curiosities of audiences discovering Marins' dubious doppelganger for the first time. Providing amusing information on the resourcefulness of the cast and crew in addition to humorous anecdotes of the perils of directing hundreds of spiders and snakes, the talon-clawed Marins comes off as a notably friendly, jovial contrast to the horrific onscreen antics of the legendary Coffin Joe.
