Disney's revitalization of its animation department in the late 1980s -- and their subsequent huge box office returns -- created a boom period for animated features from other sources as well, although few found significant financial success. Thumbelina, produced in the middle of this period, is another frustrating offering from director/animator Don Bluth. Clearly a talented cartoonist, Bluth has produced few films that realize their promise, and Thumbelina is no exception. The film's biggest problem is its screenplay, which is so freely drawn from the Andersen fairy tale as to have almost nothing in common with it beyond the idea of a tiny girl. The movie also discards the fragile delicacy of the fairy tale in favor of broad humor and hackneyed plotting. In addition, the story Bluth and Willard Carroll have devised centers around one of the most passive characters ever created for a film. Aside from her size, there is nothing distinctive about Thumbelina, and the adult viewer eventually grows tired of her, despite a fine effort from Jodi Benson. Matters are not helped by the ho-hum Barry Manilow score, which contains only one decent number ("Let Me Be Your Wings.") As usual with Bluth, the animation is superior to the story, but while it contains a number of interesting sequences, too much of it is merely serviceable. In addition to Benson, good supporting work is turned in by Carol Channing, Gilbert Gottfried and Charo.

    Very Enjoyable.

    Don Bluth does it again in this wonderful classic tale. It's exciting, romantic, and enjoyable for the whole family. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars were that there were only about 2 really good songs, while the others were only okay or kind of bad ("Marry the Mole"). I've already watched it several times since I bought it! Note: For those who think it's Disney, it's not. It's called 20th Century Fox.

    I love this Movie!!!

    I think it's a great movie 4 all ages i love the all the songs in this movie!!!! I'am 16yrs old and i still enjoy this movie.

    best disney movie ever!!

    This movie was my absolute favorite when i was younger and i still love it . i always catch myself singing the songs to myself. great for all ages i recommend it to everyone

    Hands Down The Best Movie Ever

    This has always been my favorite movie to watch as a little girl, and to this day I still enjoy watching it just as much as I did back in the 90's. The storyline is wonderful and the songs are brilliant. Thumbelina will forever be my favorite movie. I recommend this movie for children of all ages, and I'm sure many adults would love it too. Classic love story originally written by Hans Christian Andersen.

    If it's Don Bluth, it's quality....

    I've always enjoyed Don Bluth's films. These days, animation is dying out and alot of kids and adults are being subjected to horrific animation on television. People are not getting the quality they deserve,animation-wise, and more importantly, story-wise. Don Bluth has always captured the imagination with his depictive artistry and has drawn life into the characters. Thumbelina is just one out of the collective of wonderful Don Bluth films. The story of a young woman who discovers the meaning of the heart and finding out who she is as a person. I would recommend this film to anyone, whether your a kid, teenager, or adult.
