Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Gibner
Never more than a cult hit in America, the British puppet-based action program Thunderbirds was popular enough at home to spawn a couple of big-screen super adventures. For this first film, creator Gerry Anderson and his "Supermarionation" puppets run through what could be called a Thunderbirds greatest hits package. This film version features virtually nothing but all the explosions, Technicolor Thunderbird ship blastoffs, and puppets running into each other that made the original show so much fun. With the larger screen format, Anderson and co-director David Lane manage to enlarge everything in the film to a grander scale. No viewer will ever likely forget the scene where Alan Tracy and the pink-clad Lady Penelope fly through space in a pink Rolls Royce to see "the biggest star in the universe" (voiced by Cliff Richard) sing at the Swinging Star club. Even though the film's healthy quantity of cheeseball "special effects," such as the entire sequence where the Thunderbirds travel into space, will likely cause some viewers to explode with laughter, the film moves along with a contagious spirit of excitement that is hard to ignore. The greatest quality of this film, and the original series, is that everyone involved took very seriously what was seen at the time as simply entertainment for children. The end result of this passion is the rare film that is perfect entertainment for both children and adults.
