Time Bandits

Overview

Imaginative director Terry Gilliam's wild time-traveling adventure for the whole family arrives on DVD in fine form thanks to the folks at Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, and the colors are vivid with even skin tones. The transfer was obviously taken from a clean source, as there are few signs of age due to debris or wear; little evidence of edge enhancement rounds out the overall solid visual presentation. The soundtrack, presented in English Dolby Digital ...

The soundtrack, presented in English Dolby Digital Surround EX, offers a dynamic and exciting interpretation of the original stereo track. Since the film itself is rendered in High-Definition Divimax, all special features on this two-disc set are relegated to a second disc. It's likely that rabid Gilliam fans have already seen the included installment of The Directors, since it's inexpensive and readily available on DVD; if not, the hour-long retrospective does offer a solid representation of his body of work while spending a decent amount of time on Time Bandits. An interview with Gilliam and co-screenwriter Michael Palin is a bit more intimate, with the pair discussing both the various time settings and some of the more memorable aspects of the production. In addition to a humorous and creative international trailer, viewers are treated to the standard American version as well. Those interested in the screenplay can check it out on DVD-ROM, and after reading a brief history of the production in the liner notes, the insert folds out into a handy map of the universe for all of your time-traveling needs!

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Monica McIntyre
A delirious action-adventure fantasy directed by Monty Python's Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits is in some ways an updated version of The Wizard of Oz. The surreal tale follows a wee lad as he hops through time, accompanied all the while by a band of six hyperactive dwarves who harbor the "Supreme Being's" map of the universe and its hidden time portals. Together the boy and his compatriots tour Agamemnon's Greece, Robin Hood's Sherwood forest, and the Titanic as it cruises toward its destiny. But the so-called Evil One David Warner wants the map too; his epic pursuit results in a dazzling showdown involving cowboys from the Old West and knights from the Middle Ages. Time Bandits also features a superb supporting cast that includes Ralph Richardson as the Supreme Being, Sean Connery as Agamemnon, and Monty Python member John Cleese as Robin Hood. Cleese also cowrote the film with Gilliam and Python mainstay Michael Palin. Gilliam's phantasmagoric imagery is highly theatrical and riveting. Time Bandits is a fine precursor to the director's later, even more visually stunning work in Brazil.
All Movie Guide - Dan Jardine
Terry Gilliam's 1981 children's fantasy film is a curious mixture of adventure, farce, and satire that is intermittently entertaining -- if occasionally eccentric to a fault. With a camera perched at knee level, Time Bandits is told from a child's point-of-view, but rather than adopting a sickeningly sweet sentimentality, Gilliam opts for an acerbic and often nasty tone that risked offending the very audience at which it purported to be aimed. The script's indebtedness to childrens' author Roald Dahl can be seen most obviously in the relationship between the main character and his parents, particularly in the amusingly explosive conclusion. Gilliam's state-of-the-art special effects are used, ironically enough, to attack a consumer society infatuated with the latest in technological advances -- a theme he would develop more convincingly in his next (and arguably best) film, Brazil. The dozen-or-so high profile cameos are not always effectively blended into the time-tripping storyline, but when they are, Gilliam's film takes on aspects of both the surreal and existential. David Warner is the most interesting of the adult-sized performers; his devilish charms are incessantly irresistible.

A Cult Classic Unlike Anything Else!

Director Terry Gilliam(Twelve Monkeys, Brazil, etc) must have been touched by the hands of a half-mad/ half-brilliant god when he envisioned 'Time Bandits'. Unlike any film, before or since, Time Bandits blends social satire, off beat humor and a wildly imaginitive plot seamlessly together. When a young british boy, disillusioned by the materialistic and vapid world in which he resides, spirals further into his own imagination he gets more than he bargains for. Whisked away by a band of time-travelling midgets, he is quickly caught up in the eternal struggle between the forces of darkness and light which leads him, and his new found cohorts, from one period in history to another. Brilliantly cast with a revolving door of cameos(John Cleese, Sean Connery, etc) this film is a TKO for any true film buff or others who simply enjoy the offbeat. Tragically overlooked, Time Bandits deserves a spot among the best 100 films ever made.
