Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Fans young and old will find something to cheer in this three-disc set, celebrating one of the screen's most enduring comedy teams: Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The two have been at each other's tails for more than 60 years, and Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases spectacularly captures highlights from that legacy with 15 vintage cartoons that play on the violence and mayhem so gleefully spoofed by The Simpsons' own Itchy & Scratchy. Included are the Oscar winners "The Cat Concerto," "Johann Mouse," "The Little Orphan," and "Yankee Doodle Mouse," as well as Oscar nominee "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Mouse." Best of the rest include "Mouse in Manhattan" and "Kitty Foiled." A bonus segment replays one of Jerry's shining celluloid moments: his duet with Gene Kelly from Anchors Aweigh. Purists may blanch at 1993's Tom and Jerry: The Movie, in which Tom and Jerry actually talk, but parents will appreciate that this feature-length theatrical release is considerably more family friendly and way less violent. The Magic Ring is a 2002 direct-to-video production that introduces T&J to a new generation in appropriately mute fashion, as Jerry gets a charmed ring stuck on his head and wreaks havoc on the unsuspecting populace. The look of the film recalls the duo's 1940s heyday. It hits the ground running with the usual slapstick, and at a scant 62 minutes, it flies by.
