Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Let’s cut to the chase: Volume 2 is a breakneck-paced treasure trove of 38 vintage Tom & Jerry cartoons, entertaining commentaries (by animation historian Earl Kress and MadTV star Nicole Parker), and illuminating production segments. This two-disc set is bookended by Tom & Jerry’s first and last cartoons directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, taking the cat-and-mouse classic full circle. "Puss Gets the Boot" (1940) was an auspicious debut for the animated duo, who are not yet officially a team (the cat is called Jasper). By their second outing, "The Midnight Snack," the instant stars are billed above the title. They continued their antics under Hanna and Barbera’s watchful eyes through "Tot Watchers" (1958). The rest of the cartoons are presented chronologically (oddly, "Texas Tom," included in Volume 1, makes a repeat appearance here). Baby boomers who only know Hanna and Barbera through their more cut-rate made-for-TV cartoons will be amazed at the richness of the drawings, the expert comic timing, and the virtuosity of the "acting." This set comes with a disclaimer that it is intended for the adult collection and may not be suitable for children. Indeed, the cartoons are presented complete and uncut in all their eye-gouging, fork-stabbing, axe-wielding proto-Itchy and Scratchy glory. Of more particular concern in these more sensitive times are the cartoons featuring "Mammy Two-Shoes," a character illustrative of the stereotypical caricatures that were common comedic currency of the day. This character has often been edited out or had her voice redubbed for TV versions. In a sensitively handled introduction that appears on both discs, Whoopi Goldberg puts these cartoons in context and gives props to actress Lillian Randolph, who voiced the character.

I used to watch these cartoons with my dad and loved them as a child, now I get to show my son and. He loves them. The types of cartoons they make today don't have the same feel as the tom and jerry cartoons. Regardless of what they did to each other in each episode they seemed to care about each other. The episodes they showed in this disc were great and I will be buying the others. When years have passed and they can make you laugh like they did when you were young says a lot. If you like tom and jerry you'll like this disk.
