Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
A marked improvement over 1993's Tom and Jerry: The Movie in which Tom and Jerry actually talked!, this produced-for-video animated feature introduces the screen's most famous cat and mouse to a new generation in appropriately mute fashion. Tom's owner, a Gen-X wizard, leaves him in charge of his magic ring, which inevitably becomes stuck on Jerry's head. Jerry takes off downtown, at first pursued only by Tom but eventually, it seems, by the entire city. The look of the film recalls Tom and Jerry's 1940s heyday, and there are cameos by former MGM cartoon stars Droopy and bulldog Butch. Tex Avery fans will also note the homage to his classic "Bad Luck Bluckie." Like Tom and Jerry themselves, The Magic Ring hits the ground running with the usual slapstick, and at a scant 62 minutes, it flies by.
