TOM HORN reflects on the demise of the Old West and the rise of rich and powerful conglomerates. Horn (played by Steve McQueen)is the tracker who had performed many exciting exploits which won him fame. During this period, range wars between cattemen, settlers and rustlers were in play. The laws were enforced or ignored according to the personal interest of the parties involved. Tom Horn is hired as a regulator by the cattle owners association to put an end to local cattle thiefs. This is the basic plot of the film, which also allows us to understand the code of the old west through the words and actions of Tom Horn. He gave advance warning to all cattle thieves and then killed them. This is what the association initially expected him to do when they hired him. As a one man army, he kills many rustlers, sometimes within the town limits, bringing concern from the local citizens. The association makes a decision to stop Tom Horn and the last part of the film resolves this issue. The acting in this film is superb throughout, as is the scenery of the open range and mountains. All the characters possess a sense of humor as well as a dramatic flair, keeping the film balanced and credible as a story of real men and women. Linda Evans, Horn's love interest in the film, also represents the peaceful civilization that is expanding west and cannot accept the violence which Horn displays as a way of life. Richard Farnsworth plays an association member who befriends Horn but cannot save him from the trouble that Horn must face at the end of the film. A true western classic.
