Overview

Given that it's impossible to kill Tomie no matter how hard her classmates may try, viewers will find it no surprise that the menacing schoolgirl makes a horrific return in Ventura Video's release of Tomie: Rebirth -- the third film in the popular Tomie cycle. Directed by Takeshi Shimizu, the man who terrified audiences with the popular Ju-on: The Grudge, this adaptation of Junji Ito's popular manga is sure to keep viewers sleeping with the lights on. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the transfer appears somewhat washed-out and soft for much of the running time. Audio is presented in Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 with optional subtitles -- offering a satisfying presentation of the spooky soundtrack. Though stateside fans would likely be happy just to have legitimate access to the film, Ventura has really gone the extra mile to include some great extra features. Interviews with the cast and crew offer a look at their interpretation of Ito's characters and themes, and a storyboard-to-film/special effects comparison offers a revealing look at not only the director's original vision, but also a peek at how the film's unsettling effects were achieved. Clocking in a little over 20 minutes, this feature is a great look at how celluloid and simple trickery are combined to create some truly disturbing imagery. Viewers are best advised to wait until they have watched the film before accessing this feature, as it gives simple solutions to some of the films most effective chills. In addition to these informative extras, trailers for all five films in the Tomie cycle are also included.
