Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
In 1980, the prime-time schedule contained three series featuring former cast members of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Ed Asner starred in the spin-off Lou Grant, Gavin McLeod manned the helm of The Love Boat, and Ted Knight played a father prone to fretting about his grown-up daughters in Too Close for Comfort, a sitcom in the naughty-yet-nice tradition of Three's Company. Knight stars as cartoonist Henry Rush, an overprotective dad who reluctantly agrees to rent his downstairs apartment to his two daughters: sensible Jackie (Deborah Van Valenburgh) and sexpot Sara (Lydia Cornell). Too Close for Comfort did not push the prime-time envelope, but it did take advantage of lessening restrictions in sexual matters, allowing Knight some randy behavior with his wife, Muriel (Nancy Dussault), and subjecting him to the sorts of ham-handed misunderstandings that John Ritter and company once made hay with. In one episode, for instance, Henry becomes convinced that Muriel is about to have an affair with Monroe (JM. J. Bullock), the doofus with the Big Bird voice who drives everyone crazy. Legendary comedy writer Selma Diamond is a welcome recurring character as the sardonic sister of Henry's deceased former tenant, a transvestite. But it’s Bullock, as the Urkel antecedent Monroe, who elicits most of the laughs.
