Overview

Johnny Ramone was the guitarist with the wildly influential punk band the Ramones, and on September 12, 2004, a group of friends and fans gathered at the Avalon Theater in Los Angeles, California for a special benefit concert to honor the thirtieth anniversary of the band's first gig and raise money for prostate cancer research. Unknown to many attending the show, Johnny was in the final stages in the disease at the time, and he passed on just a few days later, on September 15, 2004; filmmaker and family friend Mandy Stein filmed the show, and Too Tough To Die: A Tribute To Johnny Ramone uses footage from the show and interviews with friends, colleagues and fellow musicians to pay homage to Johnny and the Ramones. Too Tough To Die has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed at 1.78:1 on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16x9 monitors. The new footage is sharp and well-detailed, with a strong, accurate color balance, while the archival material is predictably less consistent, with some sourced from video tape that has seen a lot of use, but overall there's little to seriously complain about. The audio was mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, and the mix is full-bodied and serves the music well. The performances and interviews are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. As a bonus, this edition includes a promotional trailer for the film and an optional commentary track featuring director Stein, Linda "Ramone" Cummings (Johnny's widow) and Joe Sib, one of the organizers of the concert. While the commentary is an appropriate love fest for Johnny Ramone and his band, it doesn't tell viewers all that much about either the show or the participants beyond Linda pointing out Johnny's friends on screen (who are many) or Sib praising the musicians on stage. Still, serious Ramones fans will get a smile out of this tribute to the group's iron-willed guitarist, and the material has been treated well on this release.
