While the first season of this Doctor Who spin-off was a huge hit, creator Russell T. Davies admitted that the production schedule (May-November 2006) felt a bit rushed: deeper, character-driven stories were sacrificed for stand-alone, "monster of the week" themes. In the 13 episodes of Season 2 (2008), however, greater preparation time allowed the writers to focus on the members of the Torchwood team, and the benefits are obvious. In the season opener, "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," Captain Jack (John Barrowman) is haunted by a man from his past, Captain John Hart (Buffy's James Marsters), and Hart plays a large part in the story arc of Season 2. We also learn more about Jack's past and home planet in "Adam." Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori) falls in love with a cryogenically frozen World War I soldier in "To the Last Man." Owen Harper's (Burn Gorman) life takes a turn for the worse in "Dead Man Walking" and "A Day in the Death." Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) celebrates her wedding to Rhys (Kai Owen) in "Something Borrowed" -- although everything does not go according to plan. The top episode of the season is definitely "Fragments," in which we learn how all members of the Torchwood team came to join the group. As far as love lives go, Jack intensifies his relationship with Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd), and Toshiko makes her feelings known to Owen in the tear-jerking season finale, "Exit Wounds."

    Better than the First One

After being so disappointed by the first season of this program, I had to watch the second season out of morbid curiosity. It was mostly worth it.
I can only assume that the people responsible learned a few lessons from the first season and put those lessons to good use when making this one. In the first season, the characters were so pathetic that you always wanted to see them get killed off so new characters could be brought on. They've fixed some of this. The second season has also improved its overall pace and story telling.

!SPOILER BELOW! Only read the following if you don't mind knowing some of the bigger plot issues of the series.

In the first season, there are a couple of the characters that are the most pathetic and annoying. In the second season, while the other characters are being improved, there is no amount of improvement that could help these characters without complete personality change. Fortunately, these characters have been removed from the series, though they took their sweet time about it. One in particular was good to see go, and the instant of his removal was well worth watching. Of course, through story telling the show managed to keep him around till the end of the season. Still, it's unlikely that he'll be around for season three.

Overall, this was not too bad. It gives me hope for the show.
