Maria Ripol's family comedy Tortilla Soup comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. English and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. The lack of any consequential supplemental materials is difficult to swallow, but this Columbia/TriStar release does do a fine job of presenting the film. For fans of the movie, this DVD will hit the spot.

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
The movie is cast so well that the actors bring life to their predictable destinies, and Elizondo casts a kind of magical warm spell over them all.
Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas
The film's ensemble cast is headed with understated humor and authority by Elizondo and shows to special advantage Peña's droll gifts as a comedian. Welch sails into view as spectacular-looking as ever...

Tortilla Soup 4.1 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 7 reviews.

Good movie. Just one minor annoyance - for those who are like me and prefer Widescreen format, this most definitely is not widescreen. The information is incorrect. The ISBN and UPC matched but the description is off. There is no side 1 and side 2. I decided to keep it anyways because I don't feel like trying to swap it out.

I started to watch it in Spanish class and didn't get a chance to finish. I wish I had! It's a fun movie that keeps you smiling.

Tortilla Soup what a movie, it showed how a father cared about his daughters and also how to make those delicious plates. Once you see Tortilla Soup you want to keep watching it over and over again, it is a fun loving movie to have and to watch. A very well done film.

I enjoyed this movie very much. It was realistic and funny. I especially loved Hector Elizondo as the father.
