    Classic Traffic!

This terrific live show catches Traffic, with original members Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood, in the midst of a U.S. tour to promote their "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" LP. It's kind of mind blowing to realize that this performance took place close to 40 years ago. This was produced by Taylor Hackford, and the production values (using multiple video cameras)certainly enhance the viewing and listening experience. For those who tend to think Winwood as primarily a keyboard player, he also here impresses with his guitar playing prowess. The late Jim Capaldi is a bundle of energy on percussion. And Chris Wood's efforts on the reeds adds to the jazzy flavor of several of the numbers. For me, the highlight was the finale, "Dear Mr. Fantasy".

If you enjoyed the recent release of the Clapton/Winwood "Live at Madison Square Garden" DVD, you'll want to see this incarnation of Traffic live at the Santa Monica Civic from February 1972.
