This gritty cop thriller gets a stellar DVD upgrade, courtesy of Warner Bros. home video. The picture is presented in a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen format, nicely capturing Mauro Fiore's cinematography. While a film as dialogue-driven as Training Day doesn't really call for Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, it is certainly welcome whenever director Antoine Fuqua ratchets up the action. In the extras category, Training Day does not disappoint. Fuqua provides a solid commentary track, while HBO serves up a well put together behind-the-scenes documentary. Viewers can also peruse a handful of deleted scenes that offer much more of Denzel Washington's stellar performance. An alternate ending is also offered up. Music fans have a chance to watch two videos from the film's soundtrack as well. Per the DVD standards, there are also a number of cast and crew bios and the theatrical trailer. Training Day has been given a DVD treatment that's worthy of its status as the sleeper hit of late 2001.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Denzel Washington scored his second Oscar for his arresting portrayal of a corrupt narcotics officer in this electrifying urban thriller. He plays one of L.A.’s most flamboyant detectives, a departmental legend with whom young rookie Ethan Hawke is delighted to be teamed. Their first day together starts off with a major drug bust, and in the hours that follow, the rookie learns a lot more from, and about, his new partner. Washington's Alonzo Harris is soon revealed as a thoroughly corrupt cop who delights in preying on street thugs and competing drug dealers. In keeping with his character’s naïveté and reticence, Hawke’s performance is appropriately subdued, and it earned him an Academy Award nomination of his own (for Best Actor in a Supporting Role). Cast members Scott Glenn (especially fine as a retired cop caught up in Washington’s schemes), Tom Berenger, and Harris Yulin are equally well calibrated, and rappers Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg also contribute effective turns. But Training Day belongs lock, stock, and barrel to Washington, and director Antoine Fuqua grants the star ample leeway to dominate every scene with his trademark intensity. Clearly relishing the opportunity to draw upon his dark side, Washington makes this rogue cop one of the most memorable characters he’s played over the course of a distinguished career. Fuqua supplies a feature-length commentary for the DVD, which also includes deleted scenes, an alternate ending, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and two music videos.
All Movie Guide
In his most nefarious film role yet, Denzel Washington keeps the audience stumbling off balance, forcing them to ponder whether his unorthodox crime-fighting methods are justifiable radicalism or a deviant abuse of power. With bawdy humor and grudging praise providing counterpoint to his fierce stares and verbal intimidation, it's difficult to determine whether he's toughening a protégé through trial by fire, or laughing at a patsy he despises. Antoine Fuqua's Training Day is a violent, vigorous film sure to leave viewers uneasily processing their feelings about it. In that climate of renewed reverence for the police, the film's exaggerated portrayal of narcotics officers can't help but feel a bit uncharitable. Still, there's immediacy to the thesis that these undercover cops are so ornately jeweled, so hip to street culture, and so entrenched in their renegade philosophies that they become indistinguishable from the gangsters they're hunting. The film also understands how this world is governed by bravado, as Washington astutely and systematically manipulates Ethan Hawke's eagerness to prove he's man enough for the job. Washington alternates between visceral intensity and mere showiness in a role that's courageously unlikable, while Hawke makes the most of a soft, underwritten character. Even while including a handful of stylized camera tricks, Fuqua maintains a tense realism by filming in some of L.A.'s worst neighborhoods, using his own street credibility to convince real drug dealers and low-lifes to appear in the film. No less challenging for its flawed sensationalism, Training Day is bracing cinema.
Village Voice
Propulsive, elegantly written police thriller. Amy Taubin
Los Angeles Times
Even though Training Day doesn't resolve itself as well as it deserves and ends strictly cops-and-robbers style, it's given us some great acting and something to ponder. Kenneth Turan

I think that if any actor other than Denzel had played his part, this film would have gone largely unnoticed. Ethan hawke was decent as was Denzel, but the movie isn't really that good. People are just shocked that denzel could be an unlikable character.

flawed and uneven, but at least one scene of such power it's worth owning just for the highlight reel in your head. get this one for the Denzel's astonishing and outrageous denouement

The headline summarizes the movie! Denzel gets the Oscar for this one. Forget Russel Crowe and his Beautiful Mind. Ethan was so brilliantly subtle. Denzel u r the best! U made Popoye Doyle look like a wimp!

Listen up Denzel fans... If you haven't already seen this movie in the theaters, than don't hesitate to buy this movie and add it to your collection. This movie is off the meters. Denzel Washington plays the bad guy this time around in this flick and plays his part extremely well. A Must See!

When I had first heard of training day I said ''Ah, no big deal. Just another Denzel flick.'' Boy was I wrong. I'm not a great fan of Antonnie Fuqua since he's only made 2 movies(excluding this one). I only saw his Replacment Killers, which I highly enjoyed. I didn't see Bait, because well I heard it was s***. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke blew me away with their performances. Especially Denzel from always being a 'good' guy. I reccomend this to anyone that's looking for good action, good acting, and a good movie. By the way look out for that annoying Agent from Rush Hour 2, I heard he was in it.

Training Day was a very good DVD to watch. It was on of the best movies I have seen all year,so far! Espically the soundtrack to it with Nelly and everone else on it. Denzil Washinton is a very good actor.

Could a film be more real and down to earth than Training Day? The film was of course one of the best films of the year, the performances by Ethan and Washington were astonishing.

Training Day was a good movie. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke did a great job. It had lots of action, good story about a cop who pretends to be good but turns bad and Denzel's performace. I will give this movie an A+.

This movie is probably the best movie that Denzel has been in. The action and the betrayl is unreal in this flick. This movie is a must to own on DVD!

I had honestly grown tired of all of Denzel Washington's ''goodie two shoes'' roles over the years, the great actor that he is. His performance in ''Training Day,'' however, has given me newfound respect for him as an actor unfraid to break from his usual mold and go against type. In this hard-hitting, in-your-face cop drama, not only does Washington play ''the bad guy,'' but he milks it for all its worth - and makes it look easy! His Alonzo Harris would make Dirty Harry look like Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. His Best Actor Oscar win at this year's Academy Awards was highly appropriate. Denzel Washington is arguably the best actor of his generation. Kudos as well to Ethane Hawke for holding his own against the likes of Washington, as well as snagging his first Oscar nomination. He shows that he has a long and stellar film career ahead of him. ''Training Day'' is a brutally realistic cop flick that will grab you by the throat and won't let go. The powerhouse performances of Denzel Washington and Ethane Hawke will stay with you long after the closing credits. Clearly, it is one of my ten all-time favorite films. Washington, Hawke, the supporting cast, director Antoine Fuqua, writer David Ayer, and Warner Bros. should all take a bow.

Denzel washington has once again proved what a great actor he is. I have followed Denzel's career since his television days (St. Elsewhere), and have loved him since then. Great job Denzel. Elaine Childs Phila,PA
