Overview

The interstellar battle between the Autobots and Decepticons rains destruction down on planet Earth as director Michael Bay adapts Hasbro and Takara's popular Transformers franchise into a big-budget, live-action summer tentpole extravaganza in this ambitious sci-fi action feature starring Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Bernie Mac, John Turturro, Jon Voight, and, of course, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Long ago, on the planet of Cybertron, a massive, powerful alien race divided into two factions, the noble Autobots, and the devious Decepticons. They fought for the sole access to a talisman known as the Allspark, a cube with the capacity to grant infinite power, and eventually the Autobots smuggled it off the planet's surface, hiding it in an unknown location on Earth. Now, hundreds of years later, the Deceptacons have come looking for it, and if the Autobots don't find it first, the Earth will be enslaved or destroyed by the evil aliens' use of its massive power. The Autobots don't know where the cube was hidden, but the information may be stored in the most unlikely of sources, as a gangly young Earthling named Sam Witwicky LaBeouf who's just picked up his first car, has a strange connection to the Allspark's history, making him the unlikely ally of these enormous creatures, as they fight for humankind's survival and the chance to return home.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Cammila Collar
The live-action adaptation of the Transformers franchise mixes a shot of the '80s cartoon, a dash of Michael Bay's signature brainless action style, and a pinch of Spielbergian wonder. This isn't a recipe for a perfect action movie, but if Bay knows anything, it's how to make a movie for 10-16 year old kids and inner 10-16 year old kids. At its best moments, Transformers shuts off all critical thinking portions of your brain, enthralling you with metal-grinding action sequences and midriff-baring smart-but-tough girls wearing fake eyelashes and six coats of lip gloss. At it's worst, it's just a blur of video game characters. But again, for that target audience, the movie is a grand tale of great power and great responsibility, of good and evil, and of giant robots who kick major ass. There was much trepidation among the original show's fans when it was announced that, due to a corporate tie-in with GM, many of the characters would be transforming into different vehicles than they once did. For instance, Bumblebee, a spunky, young Autobot has always fittingly transformed into a yellow and black VW Beetle -- now turns into a Camaro. The muscle car of choice for high-school football players everywhere might not sound like the right alternate form for the beloved Autobot, but the truth is that the characters are spot on for the handful of lines they each get. The cosmetic changes only really matter in that they make the characters sometimes indistinguishable, especially while in motion. Though if the filmmakers wanted us to know or care about each individual Transformer, they would also have done better to cram fewer into the story. What makes the film pass instead of fail is original Optimus Prime voice Peter Cullen reprising his role. Cullen sounds like a cross between a badass action hero, the guy who does the movie trailers, and God. His voice, in combination with the actual character of Optimus Prime, creates the ultimate giant-robot incarnation of the archetypal warrior king: full of bravery, emanating wisdom, and frequently transforming into a kick-ass Mack truck. In Bay's universe, Optimus and his Autobot comrades find a perfect landscape for their epic struggle to defeat those who would use their power for evil. It's not just a universe of fast-paced power and style, but also a universe that almost begs even cynical viewers to recapture a childlike delight in entering a world where humanity's own magnificent saviors are 50-foot-tall robot aliens that turn into cars. For that 10-16 target audience, it probably won't have to ask twice.

1984 fans, you will like it

This movie has little to do with childhood memories of the Generation 1 group. Makes no difference though. This movie introduces the world to the concept of these characters, and it does it well for the general audience. Of course, this means that fans in their 30s who thought this would be a movie all about the way they think the franchise must be portrayed will be disappointed. Then again, I doubt anyone with such standards would ever be happy even if it copied the 20+ yr old cartoons word-for-word. That said, this movie is a blast and you should just watch it with an open mind.

    more from this reviewer

Never personally met someone that didnt like this movie.

And I have allot of picky friends. I was super impressed with the movie. Some cheesy parts but for the most part was not. And the main girl was no where near as hot as the blond with the accent.

    THIS MOVIE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the epic of all movies, when I first heard of this movie I thought it would be lame and the only reason I saw it in theaters is because I am a car and technology nut.I saw it twice in theaters and Got the DVD when the first day came out and I have literly been watching it every week since, and in a few days I'll get the special edition DVD. Hope T2(aka)Transformers:Revenge of the fallen also Rocks as well Especially with a rumored ten new robots on each side Don't know if I can wait 11 more months.

Amazing Cinematic Experience, but Poor Morals

Transformers is an amazing feat of special effects and cinematography. With amazing scenes, perfect sound effects, and an excellent soundtrack "by Steve Jablonsky", it is a wonder to behold. Unfortunately, its moral content is rather lacking. Disrespect for parents and authority is promoted throughout -- by the movie’s protagonists. I know this is common in movies today, but this one went a bit over the top. Also, whatever people want to say about “It’s a PG-13 movie. What did you expect?”, everybody making this film knew that kids would be the main audience of Transformers, and there were several scenes in this movie that were too adult in nature, and that were not necessary. Also, there is a rather disconcerting underlying theme. What do the Autobots need to do? They need to destroy the Allspark, which is their creator. Now there’s a message and a half! “Destroy the creator, and the world will be saved!” All of these elements cause me to give this movie the rating I have given it. There are probably many people reading this right now, who are thinking, “All right. If you want morals, look someplace else! It’s a film, not a sermon!”. It is true that a movie’s mission is to entertain, and I must admit that Transformers did a very good job at that. But movies do have an effect on people. Thus, with so many other exciting movies that not only entertain, but also have admirable messages "The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc.", I give this movie three stars. ---Ryan Robledo, author of the Aelnathan

Coolest robots I have ever seen

I loved the Transformers movie. It might seem kind of wrong, but I actually liked some of the Decepticons more than some Autobots. My favorite transformers are Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Blackout, and Starscream. The final fight was the coolest scene in the movie. It would be so cool to have a transforming car, but sadly, reality won't allow it.

    Lots of fun. Good times

Great action and animation. Sit back and have fun. If you find Meghan Fox unnattractive, you might as well cut your junk off because you are of no use to society. Save the rest of us and don't reproduce.

Transformers the movie left me in awe. The movie contained everything an outstanding film should have. It was an action movie, a comedy, a love story, is great for all viewers over the age of 13. Ever since I was a toddler I have always liked Transformers the TV show. I like it so much I just had to go to the midnight showing of Transformers the movie. The 2-disc special edition is even better than the movie. It includes extra features, commentary, interviews with the cast and crew and much more. I highly suggest that you buy this 2-disc DVD of Transformers the movie.

    Spectacular Movie

Let's put it this way - I was able to watch it three times straight in a row on a Saturday and I would have been more than willing to watch it a fourth time. My roommate saw it seven times in theaters alone - and this is a girl you can't get to pay to see a movie twice normally.

    This film absolutly sucks!!!!

This film is supposed to be about transformers right? Why then is half of it about this teenage romance, a sam/mikalah harlequin romance that distracts from the film so much so that it is more about them than the transformers? You don't see them till like 2/3rds of the way through the film, and they are the true stars. Shia Lebouf does a good job as a nerd type of guy, but Meghan Fox looks like Karen Carpenter/Julia Stiles face with Michael Jacksons body and has as many tattos as dennis rodman. She and Lebouf had absolutley no onscreen chemistry whatsoever. The deceptacons play an even smaller part than the auto bots( the good guys of the film). Avoid this film at all costs

It's true that the main characters don't have much on-screen chemistry but Shia is a good actor. They have to introduce the characters and how they affect the world as we know it so the general audience can follow along. Visually the movie is a treat although at times I thought they made Optimus Prime seem a little foolish. Fans of the original cartoon will not be disappointed - you can quickly get over the fact that they look nothing like the Generation 1 characters, since they are so likeable.

Best Movie of '07 "So Far"!

I loved this movie. It had an amazing plot and dazzling special effects. I liked it so much I saw it FIVE TIMES. I am planning to go see it in IMAX as well. I'm stoked for the DVD release. I'll love to be able to see Bumblebee whenever I want. A word to the sceptical: I didn't know a single thing about the Transformers before I saw this movie. I got hooked. This movie is "more than meets the eye" and actually has a great story to it. Oh, and a word to Julian, this film had plenty of 'bot scenes, Shia and Meghan were great in this movie, and it got a 4.8 out of 5 stars rating on Regal Cinema's site. People, this was an awesome movie. I think it was the best movie of the summer.

    Julian "sucks"

I thought the movie rocks. My youngest son was a fan of the old Transformers TV show and he and I absolutely adored the new flick. Great special effects and the "love story" made the movie even more special. Julian needs to stick to the Godfather movies and all that gory stuff. Get a grip.

    OUTSTANDING MOVIE!!!!

Transformers is a great action, adventure movie. I saw it at one theater in HD and it was awesome!!!! I saw it again at another theater and was still caught up in the plot and the action although I have to admit that HD added to the movie. I didn't grow up playing with Transformers (after my time) and so I was looking forward to learning how the film was going to come up with a reason for their being here. I liked the way the director/producer built the suspense before the Transformers were finally introduced. Definitely getting this one in HD! Put in the DVD, kick off your shoes, grab a soda and some popcorn and hang on for the ride!!! GREAT escape movie for the viewer!!!!

As a fan of Transformers going back to 1984, I was highly disappointed with this movie. The only good thing about it was the quality of the CGI used to render the robots, despite the poor designs of said robots. The plot was a typical action movie plot, with no development. Most of the robots, who were little more that guest stars in their own movie, got no character development. On top of that, you have a story that treated the franchise, which has been successful for 20+ years, with little to no respect. All in all, this movie was not what I was hoping for, but it was everything I was expecting. This was the wrong team for this movie, and the movie shows it. If you have an IQ, avoid this movie.
