Some critics, not completely enchanted with Treasure Planet, wondered why the Walt Disney Studios didn't make a straight animated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's enduring story about a boy and his pirate. One reason may be that Disney already made that movie in 1950, a ripping adventure that ranks among the studio's greatest live-action family classics. Bobby Driscoll stars as plucky young Jim Hawkins, who comes into possession of a pirate treasure map. Robert Newton is perhaps the definitive screen Long John Silver, complete with the "aargh" brogue and "pieces of eight"-squawking parrot atop his shoulder that launched a thousand parodies. Although the PG-rated violence may seem small potatoes compared to today's screen action vehicles, it's certainly notable for a Disney movie. One pirate takes a knife in the back, and in a tense climactic scene, Jim is wounded in the shoulder. Other unfortunate swabs tend to get shot in the face. DVD enthusiasts may quarrel with the less than pristine picture quality and the lack of extras, but young seafaring landlubbers and nostalgic baby boomers will thrill to the opportunity of sailing away with Jim and crew.

The most popular and often-filmed of all pirate adventure stories is this Robert Louis Stevenson classic. It was filmed by MGM in 1934 and remade several times, but no version was more memorable than the 1950 Walt Disney effort. As Disney pictures go, Treasure Island was rather daring, with so much spectacle and violence that some of the battle sequences had to be edited out in some versions. At the heart of the film's appeal was the unique performance of Robert Newton as villain Long John Silver. Newton's combination of swagger, cruelty, and foppishness gives the film needed weight, since so much of the suspense depends on the young protagonist's fear and loathing of his nemesis. Many a young child's nightmares were filled with Newton's characterization of Silver, and Treasure Island was a prime example of the criticism that Disney's successful pictures depend as much on instilling fear as on providing comfort.

    A great Book and Movie

    This book is a great book for all ages, and you'll want to wath it again and again. This is a 5 star moive and you should also read the book it is also a great one. The ending will change slitly but it is still a good moive.
