Overview

Like Law & Order, this long-running British detective series follows cases from the crime to the courts. Brusque Detective Superintendent (later Detective Chief Superintendent) Michael Walker (David Hayman) collars London’s killers, and viewers are left to decide if justice was served. With Victoria Smurfit. From Lynda La Plante, creator of Prime Suspect. For mature audiences. 3 episodes; approx. 412 min. on 3 DVDs. Episodes include:
Volume IX - The Lovers
On honeymoon in London, Mark Harrington goes out for coffee and disappears from busy Covent Garden. Convinced that officials aren’t taking the case seriously, Harrington’s distraught bride searches the streets herself and pleads for help through the media. Meanwhile, her wealthy, well-connected father pressures DCS Mike Walker for results. When Walker’s assistant deduces that they might be dealing with a serial killer, police race against time to find the madman and his abductees.

Volume X - Sins of the Father
Emily Harrogate seems to have it all: beauty, brains, athletic talent, and a loving family. But when the teenager dies from a fall down the stairs, it looks like murder. DCI Connor begins to reveal cracks in the Harrogates’ happy-family façade: an obsessive-compulsive mother, an adulterous father, and a jealous stepbrother. Although Connor remains suspicious of the family, the investigation focuses on Emily’s secret boyfriend, apprentice electrician Michael Summerby -- who adamantly professes his innocence.

Volume XI - Closure
After two months investigating the brutal rape and murder of a schoolgirl, DCI Connor has no leads, no DNA evidence, and one highly unreliable witness. A review of similar unsolved cases suggests a serial killer at work, with a string of victims stretching back years. Under relentless badgering from her boss, Connor enlists the help of a famous American profiler to get inside the mind of an elusive murderer.

I am a huge fan of this series, and Set 3 is the best yet. There is less about Mike's private life (although it is very much a part of Episode 2 where, in a sense, Mike is punished with the mental problems of his son for his previous bad behavior with Pat North and ruthless ambition), and the series focuses more on tense and sometimes frantic police work. The first episode was excellent with its complex and very sad kidnapping case with its horrific solution -- and excellent trial sequence. Roisin Conner is even more interesting than Pat North, and she is smart enough to keep her distance from Mike Walker (at least so far). The third episode is fantastically hectic, and although we guessed whodunit early on, it was great fun watching the detectives come to the same conclusion eventually. The pacing and acting and writing was really wonderful in this episode. I hope this series, which is still running in the UK, gets some well-deserved publicity.
