Overview

One of the great stories of doomed love is given a new screen interpretation in this historical drama. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, King Donnchadh (David O'Hara) of Ireland has become the de facto ruler of England, but one of his underlings, Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell), dreams of uniting British forces with an eye toward self-rule. One of Marke's most valuable allies is Tristan (James Franco), Marke's protégé, who has become a brave warrior since he was rescued by the lord after his parents were murdered by Irish forces during a battle. While Marke and Tristan dream of banishing Ireland's presence in England, Tristan has a secret he's been hiding from Marke -- after suffering serious wounds during a hard-fought battle, he was rescued and nursed back to health by Isolde (Sophia Myles), King Donnchadh's daughter, and the two fell deeply in love. But the couple were separated after Tristan returned to England, and when Donnchadh attempts to quell the British uprising by staging a tournament among the nation's greatest warriors, an extreme and rather personal surprise is in store for Tristan. Tristan & Isolde was directed by Kevin Reynolds and produced in part by Ridley Scott, who attempted to bring the story to the screen back in the 1970s.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Director Kevin Reynolds, whose career highlight remains the Kevin Costner-in-tights action vehicle Robin Hood, heads further back in English history for a straightforward take on the Arthurian folk legend of Tristan and Isolde, the star-crossed lovers perhaps best known today from composer Richard Wagner’s beloved opera. The story opens in the late sixth century, with Europe yet to emerge from the Dark Ages. The Romans have left what will become England and Ireland, leaving the land to perpetually squabbling tribal leaders and a strong Celtic monarch, Donnchadh (David O’Hara), who has designs on the entire region. To facilitate his plan, the King promises his daughter Isolde (Sophia Myles) to Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell), the most sensible and progressive of the tribal chieftains. Marke’s most loyal subject is his young ward, Tristan (James Franco), whose life the girl once saved and with whom she is still in love. Despite the knights-and-damsels conventions of the story, this is no Prince Valiant; rather than gaudily outfitted knights and spotlessly clean castles, Reynolds presents the harsh realities of medieval life and stages his action scenes with uncompromising brutality. This mutes the romance’s dreamier aspects, but the characters are well drawn and skillfully portrayed, and it’s especially satisfying to see frequent screen heavy Sewell impress in a sympathetic role for a change.

The story of Tristan and Isolde is mentioned in almost all the great classic literary tales -from Chaucer to T.S. Eliot. This telling of the story blew me away. The performances were absolutely amazing. I felt a connection with all of the major characters. The movie is sad, but no less so than the actual written tale. I recommend it to any literary enthusiasts along with any movie enthusiasts that love a classic "love hurts" story.

The movie Tristan and Isolde is truly a classical tale of romance that should be mentioned alongside that of William Shakespeare's classical tale of Romeo and Juliet. One of the key aspects that I found most interesting about this movie, was the fact that it didn't really need all that much computer graphics to show the audience the tragic love that blossomed between Tristan and Isolde. With the use of real life scenery and some imagination, the cast and crew was able to recreate a time when anything seemed possible, with a little bit of hard work.

This movie was simply amazing. I saw it in theatres a few months ago and I still think about it almost everyday. The love that Tristan and Islode share is awe inspiring. I completly fell in love with the characters-especially Tristan-because of the the conflicts they all share. This wasnt just another movie to see and forget about, it's a movie that you will remember for years to come.

This is not a movie for the faint of heart. Watching it, I could feel the pain and passion of Tristan and Isolde as if it were my own, which is why I absolutely adore this movie. It transports you into the characters' shoes, and has fantastic love and action scenes. Oh, and James Franco could not have looked better!

It was a great movie and I loved the passion between Tristen and Isolde. Although the ending was so tragic but I guess they had to keep to the legend of Tristen and Isolde.

This was one spectacular movie, a definite "must-see" type. The plot was paced fast enough to hold inteest and the diolouge involved was breathtaking, and the ending tear inspiring. Its one of those movies that will echo in your head even days later...I kid you not. It's that good.

Overall the movie was great- clandestine romantic encounters, charming warriors in shining armour, unique Celtic background music, lavishly decorated costumes, and an onscreen dynamic between the main characters that's virtually impossible to deny. As a sucker for a sweet fairy tale ending though, this movie dispointed. However, the tragic aspects of the tale simultaneously heighten the drama of the story. Definately recommended for anyone whos in need of a good cry...

This movie is unbelievably UNDER rated! I see reviews online and I'm really shocked because... the movie isn't that bad. I mean, I don't think it's bad at all. Seriously, what's so wrong about it??? It's romantic and just.. a really good love story. It doesn't hurt that James Franco is hot :) In any case... really recommended! If you're unsure.. at least rent it or something. I myself am totally getting it :D

Tristan and Isolde was truly one of the best movies I have EVER seen. Mixed with true, deep, and passionate love, set in an era like no other, Tristan and Isolde was an outstanding movie. You'd have to be insanely nuts if this movie doesn't have you on the edge of your seat within the first few seconds of the movie to the appearence of credits rolling down the screen.
