Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Best known for her portrayal of the wild slayer Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Eliza Dushku was rumored to have chosen Tru Calling for her starring vehicle, rather than a spin-off based on her Buffy character. Although not quite up to Buffy standards, Tru Calling is still pretty darn entertaining. Dushku stars as Tru Davies, a medical student who takes a job with the city morgue after her medical internship falls through. Her squirrelly boss, Davis (Zach Galifianakis), shows her the ropes, which involves cleaning corpses and categorizing personal effects. This boring routine is interrupted one night, however, when one of the dead bodies turns to Tru and says, "Help me." With that, Tru is catapulted back in time to the previous day, and she must try to discover how and why this person died so she can effectively head off the Grim Reaper. Episodes usually involve a murder victim or someone who has died prematurely, and Tru typically has only a few clues to work with in order to save the person’s life. She can also affect events that surround her friends and family: In the series pilot, for instance, Tru tips off her brother, Harrison (Shawn Reaves), that he's destined to lose big in a card game. Episodes that showcase Tru's efforts to learn exactly what caused a person to die -- such as the fireman in "Putting Out Fires" and a man attending a bachelor party in "Past Tense" -- are among the best. Over the course of this first season we learn the follwoing: how Tru's mother was murdered in "Daddy's Girl"; what Davis knows about all this stuff in "Two Pair"; and what the mystery is behind Tru’s new co-worker, Jack Harper (Jason Priestley), in "D.O.A." It’s never a given that Tru will prevent a presumably wrongful death, and sometimes others wind up dead instead. That she doesn’t always save the right person adds to the air of mystery and makes this Tru Calling one of the more unpredictable dramas to come along in a while.

The show was really good...but no 2nd season was completely filmed, and Fox has indefinitely put the actors and crew on hiatis. Sorry to all the loyal fans!
