Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
"Death walk of the lemmings" doesn't have the same ring as March of the Penguins (2005), but it's a fascinating sequence in White Wilderness (1958), which, like Penguins, earned an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. This treasured gem is the featured attraction on Volume 1 of True-Life Adventures, the inaugural collection of Walt Disney's groundbreaking nature and wildlife documentaries. Produced between 1948 and 1960, these theatrically released features and short subjects were every bit as innovative as Disney's pioneering Silly Symphonies cartoons, with new techniques that advanced the art of cinematography. Beginning with spectacular images of avalanches and ice boulder upheavals caused by a spring thaw, White Wilderness follows the seasons and the "animals of myth and mystery" that inhabit the earth's coldest regions, including the walrus, polar bear, beluga whale, caribou, and wolverine. The film was six years in the making (it took two seasons alone to capture the caribou migration sequence). This two-disc set also includes the Oscar-winning shorts Water Birds (1952) and Beaver Valley (1950), along with the Oscar-nominated Mysteries of the Deep (1959) and Prowlers of the Everglades (1953). Elevating this and all the True-Life Adventure productions from creaky classroom fare are Winston Hibler's warm narration and the animated musical scores (Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 gives Water Birds a comical lift). Bonus episodes of The Wonderful World of Color and Disneyland immerse viewers deeper in True-Life Adventures' meticulous production process. Even if the programs feel slightly dated, they remain mesmerizing films and an entertaining way to introduce children to awe-inspiring natural wonders.
