Tumbleweeds

Overview

The images on New Line's Tumbleweeds disc are excellent, with both anamorphic 1.85 and full-frame transfers. The film ranges from dark nights to the warm, bright California sun, and in every moment it looks wonderful. The darks are very solid and the colors come across just as well. The sound, considering this is a dialogue-driven film, is good and based more in the front speakers. The disc does have a four-channel soundtrack, but there isn't any significant use of the surround speakers. The front-center speaker ...

The sound, considering this is a dialogue-driven film, is good and based more in the front speakers. The disc does have a four-channel soundtrack, but there isn't any significant use of the surround speakers. The front-center speaker is used for most of the film and it's clear and distortion-free. English subtitles are included. New Line has rarely been known to skimp on extras, and this disc is no exception. It includes filmographies (biographies would be welcome, but are not included on most New Line titles), a trailer, and some DVD-ROM content. The highlight though is the commentary track from director Gavin O'Connor. The track is a real stream of consciousness effort as he rambles on -- in a good way -- about the making of the film and working with a small budget. This is a worthy DVD presentation of a fine film.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Tumbleweeds is a triumph of three creative talents playing against type: a Brit who does a dynamite Southern accent (Janet McTeer), a 14-year-old with the acting chops of an adult (Kimberly J. Brown), and a blue-collar beefcake from any truck stop in America, who also happens to be the film's director (Gavin O'Connor). Essentially a mother-daughter road movie, a character study played out over multiple states, Tumbleweeds exceeds its modest goals due to the outstanding work of these three. McTeer was nominated for Best Actress for her note-perfect performance of a shiftless party girl with a penchant for meeting the wrong men. Despite these drawbacks, Mary Jo is also a loving mother who treats her daughter like a playmate and equal, making for a richly complex dynamic between the two. Brown perfectly captures the difficult-to-act age of a girl wavering between child and teen, and O'Connor is strong as the latest lout in their lives, not half the stereotype he could have been, and sympathetic enough to justify Mary Jo's affection for him. It's a movie that examines the tiny tremors of daily life, and does so with a familiar touch. Jay O. Sanders is also memorable as the one suitor who might actually treat them well -- a character trait that initially gets him nowhere with Mary Jo, who seems addicted to abusive relationships.

    I love this movie!!!!!

This is movie is so great! It totally reminded me of my relationship with my mom. I just happened to rent it after a friend recommended it to me, and now it is one of my favorite movies! Janet Mcteer and Kimberly J. Brown are awesome-they played really well together. See this movie-you won't regret it!!

    Prescribed for Insomniacs....

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The actors were good, but the plot was bland. If you have trouble sleeping, rent it-you'll be snoring within 15 minutes. It's one of those movies you won't turn off because you keep hoping it gets better but it never does.
