This is a gorgeous production. I have the Met DVD as well, and it's a tossup between them. Eva Marton is in both. She is good as Turandot, but her interpretation is pretty much the same in both productions. I like Michael Sylvester a lot- he has a beautiful, powerful voice, and his acting is very good. Lucia Mazzaria is okay as Liu, but the Met's Leona Mitchell is much better. The sets and costumes on this DVD have a surreal, Oriental edge to them that brings a new level to the opera which the Met's traditional ones can't match. The sound and picture quality are better here. The SF chorus and orchestra do as well as the Met's, so maybe this one is the best choice after all.

I thought this production was altogether pretty bad.Calaf has an American accent. Turandot looks way to old and has a tough time reaching her notes. Ping ,Pand and pong look like italian clowns in patched up gear. The chorus has a really hard time staying on key.Especially the soprans. Liu has a really lilty voice and isn't pretty at all. Its not worth your money and if you're looking for quality opera its definately not worth your time. If you really want to see this check it out at your local library.
