This episode features turning points for some major characters as well as several occurrences of supernatural visions. The wounded Agent Cooper Kyle MacLachlan has his first visions of the Giant Carel Struycken, who gives him three clues and takes his ring. At One-Eyed Jacks, the disguised Audrey Sherilyn Fenn manages to avoid her father as a client and gets imprisoned by Blackie Victoria Catlin. Now that Jacques is dead, Leland's Ray Wise hair has turned white and his previous grieving has turned to insane happiness, in which he dances and sings "Mairzy Dotes." Donna Lara Flynn Boyle also goes through some changes by wearing Laura's sunglasses, smoking cigarettes, and volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program. Maddy Sheryl Lee has a brutal vision, and Major Briggs Don Davis has his own vivid dream, which he shares with his son, Bobby. At the Sheriff's office, Albert Rosenfeld Miguel Ferrer returns and forms a theory with Agent Cooper about the night of Laura's death, which includes the presence of the killer, BOB. After the mill fire, Josie and Catherine are missing, and Shelly and Pete are in the hospital. As Leo Eric Da Re barely survives in a coma, the last known living person at the murder scene -- Ronette Pulaski Phoebe Augustine -- starts to awaken from her coma to have disturbing visions.

When Twin Peaks premiered in April 1990, some folks in the television industry thought ABC executives had lost their grip, green-lighting a dreamy, often bizarre prime-time drama built around a season-long murder investigation. Created by big-screen auteur David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan, the square-jawed lead from Lynch's art-house hit Blue Velvet, the first season focused on the murder of prom queen Laura Palmer Sheryl Lee and the investigation into her death by plucky FBI agent Dale Cooper MacLachlan in the town of Twin Peaks, Washington. By the time the first season ended on a cliffhanger -- Cooper had been shot!, it was clear that ABC had a hit on its hands; the network ordered 22 episodes for Season 2, demanding that Lynch resolve the Laura Palmer mystery. Pressed to meet an increasingly rigorous production schedule, Lynch and his partner, Mark Frost, hired additional directors and writers, and the show became less eccentric. Season 2 reveals Palmer's killer, of course, but also veers off in new directions: We are introduced to the Black Lodge and its mysterious denizens; we learn about Laura's secret diary; more is revealed about the giant, the Log Lady, and the Man from Another Place; and we finally find out exactly who "Bob" is. Following the cancellation of Twin Peaks in 1991, Lynch filmed a prequel film in 1992 entitled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, also available on DVD. Fans are advised to watch the series first and then the film, as the latter delves into Dale Cooper's fate at the end of Season 2.

The show that gave birth to modern television

Twin Peaks Season 2 has a justifiably mixed reputation. Creators David Lynch and Mark Frost were pressured by ABC to end the Laura Palmer plot sooner than they planned, as the execs didn't think anyone would watch a mystery that took longer than a dozen episodes to resolve "this from the network that would eventually air Lost". With their main plot was finished, the show visibly flounders for the next few episodes, with the comedy too broad and the b-stories either superfluous "a food critic comes to town", or interminable "anything involving James Hurley". Eventually, though, the show finds its footing again, and with the Windom Earle plot delivers several suspenseful episodes capped by the best finale of any show ever. Twin Peaks Season Two is 85% great, with the lesser material being all the more glaring because of the gold that surrounds it. However, be forgiving of its flaws, and remember that Twin Peaks is writing the rules for all the great shows that followed it. Every later series of worth, be it the X-Files, Northern Exposure, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Deadwood, or Veronica Mars exists because of the risks that Lynch and Frost took. Only after Twin Peaks would TV have the freedom to have the complex characters, multi-season plots, and genre-mixing that has marked every critically acclaimed and loyally watched show since. So see how the rules were broken and enjoy a great show with Twin Peaks.
