Twin Peaks Season 2 has a justifiably mixed reputation. Creators David Lynch and Mark Frost were pressured by ABC to end the Laura Palmer plot sooner than they planned, as the execs didn't think anyone would watch a mystery that took longer than a dozen episodes to resolve "this from the network that would eventually air Lost". With their main plot was finished, the show visibly flounders for the next few episodes, with the comedy too broad and the b-stories either superfluous "a food critic comes to town", or interminable "anything involving James Hurley". Eventually, though, the show finds its footing again, and with the Windom Earle plot delivers several suspenseful episodes capped by the best finale of any show ever. Twin Peaks Season Two is 85% great, with the lesser material being all the more glaring because of the gold that surrounds it. However, be forgiving of its flaws, and remember that Twin Peaks is writing the rules for all the great shows that followed it. Every later series of worth, be it the X-Files, Northern Exposure, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Deadwood, or Veronica Mars exists because of the risks that Lynch and Frost took. Only after Twin Peaks would TV have the freedom to have the complex characters, multi-season plots, and genre-mixing that has marked every critically acclaimed and loyally watched show since. So see how the rules were broken and enjoy a great show with Twin Peaks.
