Twister

( 22 )

Overview

One of the early children of DVD, Twister was greatly criticized for a lackluster image, but the fact is, it's not nearly as bad as reported. At the same time, it's far from perfect, far from the quality that later discs saw as the norm. The 2.35:1 picture is anamorphic, but does show signs of shimmering and aliasing. While at times slightly distracting, these faults really don't damper the overall effectiveness of the generally solid transfer. Colors are faithfully reproduced and detail is generally strong. While at times slightly distracting, these faults really don't damper the overall effectiveness of the generally solid transfer. Colors are faithfully reproduced and detail is generally strong. The sound on the other hand, in both English and French 5.1 Dolby Digital, is outstanding and very aggressive. The theatrical experience is reproduced nicely with a wide range and liberal uses of the surround speakers. Extras -- the feature that would eventually propel DVD to the forefront of the home entertainment industry -- are certainly weak. Beyond some production notes, the only included supplement is the theatrical trailer. True fans will want to keep their eyes open for the "special edition," released a few years after this initial offering.

Barnes & Noble
Trading in the bus for a tornado, Speed director Jan De Bont brews up one of the most spectacular natural disaster films to ever hit the screen. When a record-breaking number of tornadoes attack the Midwest, Jo Helen Hunt and Bill Bill Paxton lead their team of "storm chasers" through Oklahoma in hopes of recording scientific evidence and devising an earlier warning system. Thought the nominal story takes a backseat to the truly amazing special effects, there is an appealing chemistry between Hunt and Paxton, and the supporting cast led by Cary Elwes and Phillip Seymour Hoffman supplies laughs. And if character development sometimes gets lost in the storm, De Bont creates a memorable villain in the devastatingly believable -- and beautiful -- spectacle of a computer-animated tornado. The skies are threatening, the landscape sweeping, and cows and tractors flying through the air will remind you of that other famous Hollywood cyclone. No one ends up in Oz here, but Twister has a magic all its own. -- J. D. Merrill

Love the movie, but the blu-ray is just like the DVD

As I said in the headline, this blu-ray doesn't appear to be any sharper or less grainy than the DVD. If you own the DVD, I wouldn't bother buying this.

From a Storm Chaser's Point of View

As a storm chaser, its not very realistic, yet seeing all the similarities between the movie and the reality make this movie one of my favorites of all time.

    wow

I dont know what it is, I'm freaked out by tornadoes, and yet I love movies about them. This movie, was by far the best twister movie ever(not that there have been many). There was really good acting in this movie, and good special effects. Go out and see this movie!

    Its a twister...its a twister!!!

I liked Twister because for one, he takes place in Oklahoma where I live, and two, because it tells of a natural disaster that people in the Tornado Alley get. This is a great movie that tells the truth of tornadoes. Of course, many parts are not real(like the cow) but it adds the visual affect needed to get the point across on wind speed and such.

30 minutes excitement, 90 minutes boredom

When the wind stops blowing, you might say, ''Twister'' starts to. Some pretty terrific extreme- weather scenes (which nevertheless could've been scarier if the filmmakers made the scenes a little more ragged and chaotic, as though they were filming actual tornadoes) are the ''good parts'' that are the viewer's reward for sitting through a dull soap-opera plot about two soon-to- be-divorced storm chasers. There may be a very talented cast here, but you'd never be able to tell (aside from Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a relatively early role--he's the only tolerable one in the bunch). Aside from that, there are wall-to-wall improbabilities that try the patience even more and leave no doubt you're watching a Hollywood blockbuster that can't be bothered with telling a credible story. Why else would a killer storm with 300-mph winds suck up an 18-wheeler off the highway but leave the two lead characters unscathed (not to mention that it can disintegrate a house but can't even ruffle the grass 50 feet away from the funnel cloud)?

    Wind lashing action

I watched this movie to see Helen Hunt. And she plays her part well. But the star of this movie is the Twister and the effects it has on it surroundings. The special effects are great. I have heard some people say that the plot is not great....There is a love story, a healing of a pscological trauma and the story of what it is like to be a storm chaser.....So I think there is a plot with sub-plots involved. But when all is said and done, the twister steals the show.
