Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
Although its sentimentality, serious life lessons, and campy humor sometimes coexist less than peacefully, this modest outing from Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan goes down easily thanks to the low-key performances of Kathy Bates and Rupert Everett. Bates, as jilted homemaker Grace Beasley, and Everett, as the secret gay lover of Barry Manilow-esque crooner Victor Fox, never oversell the feather-light material or take themselves too seriously. Even during the film's thoughtful moments, their performances are assuredly low-key. That leaves the broad comedy in the hands of supporting players Meredith Eaton (as a wonderfully profane daughter-in-law who just happens to be a little person) and Lynn Redgrave (as Fox's grasping, hypocritical sister). Peter Sarsgaard plays a window washer with the soul of a poet and a terrible secret, but he's far more convincing in his enigmatic early scenes than he is during the exaggerated denouement. Dan Aykroyd, as Grace's estranged husband, plays it surprisingly straight, but Jonathan Pryce gets to have fun as the retro pop singer whose death sets the plot in motion. If the script had been a little more over the top and a tad less concerned with Oprah-style epiphanies, Unconditional Love might not have gone straight to cable in the United States. As is, instead of a big-screen misfire, it's a pleasant small-screen trifle.

    Loved it!

reminded me of my sister, who is a Barry Manilow fan. Very funny. I sang the songs for days afterward. Recommend it and lent my copy to friends and family. Of course, I bought and sent my sister her own copy.

    Creative, funny, delightful.

Finally - a movie starring Kathy Bates! This comedy is fun, full of laughs yet compassionate towards people and their flaws. Some delightful cameos, incredible 'spoof' scenes making fun of popular films, and some real messages about life, diversity, etc. What an overall delight!

    Never Heard of GREAT

This movie is wonderful. It's truly funny and poignant. I found that the way I felt about it after the introductory scene (song) to the end changed for the better. I warched 'Victor Fox' sing thru the beginning and thought -oh, I don't know. At the end he was wonderful because of what he represented. (Could that be called great directing and acting?) It's worth buying and a keeper!

    Wonderfully Quirky

This is one of those 'have to see' movies. The characters, especially the daughter-in-law, are the kind you want to be friends with. Outlandish, but lovable. A really feel good movie.

    A Keeper

With all the hardships of life Unconditional Love give us a glimps of what we can be/do in this world. A coming of age movie for the more seasoned viewers. A good protrayal of life. The music is upbeat and lively. Amazing what can give us inspiration. It's lovely to see well-known artists still performing so well. A week doesn't go by that I don't have to pop it in the player, if nothing else than for a cheerful background. I just wish that the soundtrack of the music was available as well.

    A review in the wings

This is not a review yet, but it will be! Contrary to popular belief this movie was never released in the UK, considering it was filmed in the most beautiful parts of this fabulous land, Herefordshire and Shropshire, and considering it has many British stars, we find this non-distribution very puzzling. The interest here is HUGE! I have bought several DVD's from amamzon.com and will order another 70 or more next week for the many film extras who live all around here, but we have the added problem of different regions on our players....ho hum! so we are all buying new multi-region players just to watch this!! Soon as we get our copy, we watch for the postman every day for the delivery, we will write a review but I am afraid it will be somewhat biased....anything with Rupert Everett in has got to be brilliant! Wonderful comedy

This comedy is first rate. I hadn't really laughed at a comedy in ages until I found this one. The way Kathy Bates is as a comedian shows what a great actress she is. Rupert Everett is great in this movie. The ending is kind of flakey but what do you want realizim in a comedy.
